Patent settlement with Apple nets Qualcomm a cool $4.5 billion (or more)

Apple and Qualcomm ended their two-year legal battle abruptly last month with a surprise settlement, but for how much has been the million-dollar question on everyone’s mind. Thanks to Qualcomm’s Q2 earnings published this week, we now have an approximate number: $ 4.5 billion to $ 4.7 billion, not counting future royalties for Apple’s use of their chips.

Samsung is investing $115 billion to take on Qualcomm and Intel

Samsung is earmarking $ 9.5 billion a year for Samsung LSI and Samsung Foundry.

Samsung Electronics is one of the largest semiconductor players around, and the manufacturer is investing $ 115 billion (133 trillion won) over the next 12 years to take on Qualcomm and Intel. Samsung says its goal is to become the world leader in semiconductors and logic chips, and the company will invest $ 9.5 billion a year from now through 2030.

Huawei posts record $107 billion in revenue for 2018

Huawei’s U.S. troubles haven’t affected its bottom line in any meaningful way.

2018 was a turbulent year for Huawei in the U.S., but it looks like its troubles haven’t had any impact on the company’s bottom line. In spite of political headwinds in Western markets, Huawei posted revenues of $ 107 billion (721.2 billion yuan) for the year, surpassing the $ 100 billion mark for the first time. U.S. judge says Qualcomm owes Apple nearly $1 billion in rebate payments

Qualcomm ordered to pay nearly $ 1 billion in patent royalty rebates, but a payment may not be forthcoming.

In a preliminary ruling, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California ruled that Qualcomm owed Apple nearly $ 1 billion in rebate payments that were part of the business cooperation agreement of the two companies. Eight Android apps with 2 billion+ downloads are committing ad click fraud

Offending apps include Clean Master, CM File Manager, Battery Doctor, and more.

Google’s made considerable efforts over the years to reduce the amount of junk that pops up on the Play Store, but even with all of that hard work, some garbage still seeps through the cracks. On November 26, BuzzFeed News published a report outlining how eight Android apps on the Play Store are being used to commit click fraud with advertisements.

Google withdraws its bid for Pentagon’s $10 billion cloud contract

Google says the project doesn’t align with its AI principles.

The Pentagon is currently soliciting bids for a $ 10 billion cloud computing contract that will involve shifting vast troves of data from the Department of Defense to a commercial cloud. Google was one of the tech giants angling for the project, along with Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and others, but today the company announced that it is withdrawing its bid.

Google just dodged a £4.4 billion lawsuit in the United Kingdom

The lawsuit has been going on for more than 6 years.

Google’s been no stranger to lawsuits over the years, and on October 8, a court in the United Kingdom decided to drop a £4.4 billion one that was originally filed over 6 years ago.

Between August 2011 and February 2012, it was discovered that Google was bypassing privacy settings on iPhones to collect gender, race, shopping habits, and other data on users through Apple’s Safari browser.

Samsung forecasts all-time record profit of $15.5 billion in Q3 2018

After a downturn in Q2, Samsung is once again back to shattering profit records.

Samsung is on track to beat the $ 14.6 billion in profits it netted in Q1 2018. In its Q3 2018 earnings guidance, Samsung is forecasting an operating profit of $ 15.5 billion (17.5 trillion won) on the back of revenues of $ 57.5 billion (65 trillion won).

Pandora is being purchased by SiriusXM for $3.5 billion

The deal should be completed in Q1 2019.

Pandora, one of the oldest names in the music streaming market, is being purchased by SiriusXM for $ 3.5 billion in stock. The deal was announced on Monday, September 24, and SiriusXM expects that everything should be finalized around the first quarter of 2019.
