The last year saw more than 82 billion Google Play app installs

Google Play sees a huge uptick in app installs in 2016.

At I/O 2017, Google’s VP of Engineering for Android, Dave Burke, revealed that over 82 billion apps have been installed from Google Play last year, a noticeable uptick from the 65 billion in 2015. Android itself now powers over 2 billion active devices, and is the largest operating system in the world.

Verizon spent $3.1 billion for a 5G company that AT&T was going to buy for $1.6 billion

Verizon is getting spendy on some big 5G acquisitions, because it doesn’t want to be behind again.

When Verizon decides it wants something, an extra $ 1.5 billion is no problem. According to the Wall Street Journal, America’s biggest cellular provider has agreed to spend $ 3.1 billion — $ 1.5 billion more than AT&T’s initial purchase offer — to acquire Straight Path Communications, which has one of the largest battle chests of potential 5G spectrum in the U.S.

Google is ready to spend a billion dollars to give the Pixel a curved display

Google is looking to better compete with Samsung by partnering with LG on displays.

Google is ready to spend close to $ 1 billion — around $ 880 million at today’s exchange rate — to LG Display to produce curved OLED panels for its next Pixel phones, according to Korea’s Electronic Times (via Reuters).

Pokémon GO surpasses $1 billion in worldwide gross revenue

Oculus owes half a billion dollars to ZeniMax for copyright infringment

ZeniMax versus Facebook ended today with $ 500 million for the former and a tiny bit of retribution for the latter.

ZeniMax has been awarded half a billion dollars after a judge found that Oculus co-founder, Palmer Luckey, did not comply with a non-disclosure agreement.

According to Polygon, Oculus is paying out $ 200 million for breaking NDA and $ 50 million for copyright infringement. Oculus and Luckey each have to pay an extra $ 50 million  [Read More…]

Alphabet posts revenue of $26 billion as hardware unit gains momentum

Alphabet’s Other Bets are starting to pay off.

Google’s parent company Alphabet posted Q4 2016 earnings of $ 26 billion, an increase of 22% from the $ 21.3 billion it netted during the same period in 2015. Profits also saw a healthy increase to $ 5.3 billion, up $ 300 million from last quarter.

Struggling LeEco gets $2.4 billion investment lifeline from Chinese real estate company

LeEco has gotten some much-needed cash from a new investor.

LeEco has been struggling financially as of late as it expands globally, but Chinese real estate holding company Sunac China Holdings seems to have faith in the company as it acquired stakes in three LeEco businesses for 16.8 billion yuan, or about $ 2.4 billion.

Xiaomi India’s revenues exceeded $1 billion in 2016

Xiaomi sold a lot of phones in India in 2016.

Xiaomi has announced that it crossed $ 1 billion in revenue in 2016 from its Indian unit.
