The Blocks modular smartwatch launched on Kickstarter in 2015 and is now available to purchase.

Back in 2015, smartwatches were in their golden age. The Apple Watch had just launched, Android Wear was still appealing and Pebble still existed. At the same time, a little company called Blocks launched a Kickstarter campaign for its modular smartwatch, with a promised ship date of May 2016.

Chinese government blocks WhatsApp ahead of Communist Party meeting

WhatsApp falls to the Great Firewall.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and most Google services are blocked in China, and WhatsApp is now joining that list. As reported by The New York Times, the Chinese government is cracking down on the Facebook-owned messaging service, with users all over the country facing disruptions.

Oculus Rift update blocks third-party app that ported its VR games to HTC Vive [Update]

Oculus released a software update to its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset this week that blocks the use of Revive, a third-party app that allowed for the porting of exclusive Rift VR titles to the rival HTC Vive headset.

EU blocks Three’s £10 billion takeover bid for Telefonica’s O2

The EU has blocked the CK Hutchison — owner of Three UK — bid to take over Telefonica’s O2 operations in the UK due to concerns that the merger would limit customer choice and increase prices. As reported by the BBC, the deal was to be worth around £10.3 billion, reducing the number of major operators to just three — EE, Three and Vodafone.

BLOCKS modular smartwatch teams with AT&T for cellular connectivity in the US

BLOCKS, the company behind an upcoming modular smartwatch which is currently near the end of its Kickstarter, has announced that it will collaborate with AT&T for cellular connectivity in the US. The smartwatch will also have a number of new modules, including a heart rate monitor, a fingerprint reader, and customizable and removable covers.

China blocks access to Gmail through apps

Access to the Gmail website has been blocked for some time in China, but now the Chinese government is also blocking access to Gmail through apps. The block affects not just the official Gmail apps, but also accessing Gmail through third-party apps.

Android Wear version 4.4W.2 rolling out with subtle notification tweak, building blocks for future features

A new version of Android Wear, 4.4W.2, is rolling out to watches with some extremely subtle tweaks. The new update (software KNX01Q on our LG G Watch) honestly doesn’t seem to change much, but there are two user-facing features that are of note — the ability to “dismiss” the top notification from your watch face, and a new “Play Music” command. There are also a couple of back-end changes that hint at future features.

Google blocks sideloading of Chrome extensions

To protect users from malicious attacks, Google has implemented a change to the Chrome browser so that extensions can now only be installed if they are downloaded from the Chrome Web Store. For end users, this means that you cannot download an extension from another source and try to install or force the browser to run it.
