These are all the carriers that support Google’s ‘Chat’ enhanced messaging

Chat is Google’s bold bet on RCS.

Google pledged its support for Rich Communications Services back in 2015 by acquiring Jibe, and last week we heard that the company is looking to build out a suite of advanced messaging services into its Android Messages app with a new feature called Chat.

Chat will bring a whole new set of capabilities to Android Messages, and the feature will leverage the Rich Communications Services standard to do so. As  [Read More…]

Google ‘Chat’: Everything you need to know

Google might have finally found a way to fix online chat for everyone after years of trying.

Google Chat is said to be the latest messaging solution from the company and if the rumors are true, every problem with online messaging could disappear. That’s a pretty bold statement, but what Google Chat is (and what it isn’t), as well as how it’s different from previous attempts, makes me believe that there’s nothing else any one company can  [Read More…]

Google’s RCS ‘Chat’ plans are actually kind of brilliant

Improving a standard is way, way better than creating a walled garden. Every time.

Did you hear? Google is releasing yet another unified messaging app at I/O this year, and they’re sunsetting the Allo app they announced last year! How crazy is that?! Does anyone a that company have any clue what they are doing?!?!1!ONE?!!

Lets all take a deep breath for a moment and catch up.

Thanks to some absolutely stellar reporting from The Verge, we  [Read More…]

Google to evolve Android Messages into ‘Chat’ using RCS, pause Allo development

This may finally be the one Google chat service that works.

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Google has a plan to launch a unified messaging system. Right, it’s done this what feels like a dozen times before — but the reality is it’s been like half a dozen, and that’s still bad. Google Talk, Google Voice, Google+ Huddles, Hangouts, Allo … yeah, not a set of successes right there. The latest attempt, according to a  [Read More…]

Hangouts Chat, Google’s Slack competitor, is now available to download

Included as a core G Suite service from here on out.

If you work remotely or in a large organization, chances are your company uses Slack for business-related communication. It’s something we use here at Android Central every single day, and Google’s hoping it can steal away Slack loyalists with the launch of Hangouts Chat.

Hangouts Chat was first announced about a year ago last March, and it was first rolled out as part of an Early  [Read More…]

Your weekend comments thread is here, so take a break and chat it up

Whether working or playing (or both), everyone can enjoy a minute or two of internet-ing with friends.

I thought I would be taking advantage of a spell of warm weather and getting outside to spend some time with my favorite hobby — fiddling around with some woodworking tools — but instead, I’m stuck inside watching it rain on this dreary Saturday afternoon. Bleh. I need to get my mind clear and I have a chess set to get done  [Read More…]

Google Phone v17 introduces chat heads feature during calls

Good artists copy, great artists steal.

As much as I loathe Facebook Messenger, one of the app’s best features is Chat Heads. The ability to quickly open and hide conversations in a small bubble that lives on your home screen is extremely convenient, and the latest v17 update for the Google Phone adds its own take on this.

After downloading the new update, leaving the Google Phone app during an ongoing call will result in a “chat  [Read More…]
