Starting today, Verizon and Google will start rolling out Universal Profile RCS (or Chat, as the carrier calls it) in the Messaging app for Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users on the network.

Simplify your listening and messaging experience while driving.

Android Auto is already powerful, but its latest update brings improvements to two its most-used features: media browsing and messaging.

On the media front, Android Auto is creating a new “browse” experience that immediately surfaces content as soon as you select an app. You’ll be immediately presented with large touch targets to jump right into playlists, artists or podcasts, and with one tap can sort alphabetically to get what you want  [Read More…]

Portal from Facebook review: My new favorite way to video chat

This little box has reset my expectations for video chat everywhere.

Having a smart display in your home means different things to different people. Some like having a nice connected digital photo frame that also occasionally answers questions and controls smart home tech. Others enjoy using these displays as a whole home hub, with information for each person in the house and sort of mission control for music throughout the house.

Me? I like having these displays  [Read More…]

NVIDIA Shield, which is receiving a new software update today, is even better than when it was released in 2015. ($ 179 at Amazon)

The venerable Android TV box gets its 20th update with Shield Software Experience 7.1.

There’s a reason why we say the NVIDIA Shield is one of the best streaming boxes you can buy (and definitely is the best if you’re all-in on Android) — and today NVIDIA reminds us why. The Android-based  [Read More…]

Instagram Video Chat slides into your DMs

In what seems like an almost weekly occurrence, Instagram has rolled out another new feature. Today finds us learning about Instagram Video Chat, a service that lets users directly communicate with one another via live video.

Video chat appears as a new icon inside of your Direct Message threads and hands you off to one-on-one conversations. Make that one-on-three as the app allows for group chats of up to four users.

Of course, being Instagram, you get camera effects to  [Read More…]

Google Chat isn’t the next iMessage and wasn’t supposed to be

Google Chat will not fix your morning coffee, rotate your tires, or be the life coach you’ve always wanted either. It will make texting better, though.

Remember way back on April 19, 2017 when the Verge told us about Google Chat? In case you’ve been under that rock we all like to hide under sometimes, it’s a push to get everyone — carriers and manufacturers of phones, tablets and computers — to adopt the RCS universal profile.  [Read More…]

These are all the carriers that support Google’s ‘Chat’ enhanced messaging

Chat is Google’s bold bet on RCS.

Google pledged its support for Rich Communications Services back in 2015 by acquiring Jibe, and last week we heard that the company is looking to build out a suite of advanced messaging services into its Android Messages app with a new feature called Chat.

Chat will bring a whole new set of capabilities to Android Messages, and the feature will leverage the Rich Communications Services standard to do so. As  [Read More…]

Google ‘Chat’: Everything you need to know

Google might have finally found a way to fix online chat for everyone after years of trying.

Google Chat is said to be the latest messaging solution from the company and if the rumors are true, every problem with online messaging could disappear. That’s a pretty bold statement, but what Google Chat is (and what it isn’t), as well as how it’s different from previous attempts, makes me believe that there’s nothing else any one company can  [Read More…]
