Verizon kicks off 5G network one week early; Chicago and Minneapolis go live

Verizon on Wednesday launched its mobile 5G network in parts of Chicago and Minneapolis, a shade over one week earlier than anticipated.

As to why the carrier moved things up unexpectedly and without warning, there’s a very obvious reason. By doing so it is able to claim that it’s “first commercial 5G network in the world that works with a 5G smartphone”. A feather in its proverbial cap, if you will.

Verizon begins rolling out its 5G network in Chicago and Minneapolis

Do you have the need for speed? If so, then you’ll be happy to hear that Verizon is currently rolling out 5G connectivity a week ahead of schedule. Typical speeds are expected to be 450Mbps with peak speeds of up to 1Gbps. That makes 5G up 10 times faster than traditional LTE networks. Verizon taps Chicago, Minneapolis as first 5G markets

Verizon on Wednesday announced that Chicago and Minneapolis will serve as the carrier’s first two markets to receive its 5G Ultra Wideband technology.

The next-gen, super fast network gets started on April 11 with select areas of each city getting the 5G treatment. The two are just the first of what should be some 30 cities over the course of 2019.

Verizon’s 5G network is coming to Chicago and Minneapolis on April 11

The 5G Moto Mod goes up for pre-order on March 14.

5G networks are finally becoming a reality, and on April 11, Verizon will officially launch its own in Chicago and Minneapolis in the U.S. Following the launch of its 5G network in these two cities, Verizon says it’ll later expand it to “more than 30 U.S. cities in 2019.”

A permanent Google retail store may be launching in Chicago

The building is two stories and nearly 14,000 square feet.

For the past two years, Google’s launched pop-up stores in major cities around the U.S. shortly after the launch of its new yearly hardware refresh. This is a good way to allow potential customers to get some hands-on time with the new tech, but Google may soon get a permanent home for its retail goods in Chicago.
