LG reports record Q1 profits despite struggling smartphone division

The company saw an operating profit of USD 1.03 billion for Q1 2018.

Just ahead of the G7 ThinQ unveiling, LG’s released its financial results for the first quarter of 2018. Looking at the company as a whole, Q1 saw total sales of USD 14.1 billion and operating profit of USD 1.03 billion.

Nest officially merges with Google’s hardware division

Right back where we started.

Following a report from last November, Nest CEO Marwan Fawaz announced on February 7, 2018, that Nest and Google’s hardware team are merging together in an attempt to create even better smart home products.

Google expected to buy HTC phone division, trading halted ahead of news

HTC will be making a major announcement in the coming days.

Taiwanese media reported earlier this month that HTC was in the “final stage of negotiation with Google” for selling off its smartphone business, and it looks like things are coming to a head. Bloomberg says that HTC will halt trading its shares tomorrow “pending a major announcement,” which will be Google’s purchase of HTC’s phone business.

HTC denies rumors of mobile division sale

HTC is saying rumors of a forthcoming sale of their mobile division are false.

HTC is “strongly denying” rumors out of China that the Taiwanese tech manufacturer is reportedly planning a sale of its smartphone business. Rumor has it HTC would announce the deal for early 2017.

But HTC has been adamant in its denials of the rumors. In a statement provided to Android Central, a representative from HTC strongly denied the reports, calling them false.

Verizon builds on IoT division, acquires ‘smart city’ tech firm

Verizon is hoping to make our city street corners smarter in the not-too-distant future.

Verizon made a move to expand it’s IoT business today, announcing the acquisition of LQD WiFi LLC., a private company based in New York that designed and developed publicly-accessible smart hubs. Samsung posts lowest profits in two years as mobile division feels the burn

Samsung posted its Q3 2016 results, and as the company forecast last week, the discontinuation of the Note 7 had a noticeable impact on its bottom line.

Overall revenue was down 7.5% to $ 42.01 billion (47.82 trillion Won), a decrease of $ 3.4 billion (3.87 trillion Won) from the same period last year. Operating profit was down by 30% to $ 4.56 billion (5.20 trillion Won), its lowest in two years.

LG reporting big loss in Q2 2016 for its mobile division

LG is doing well overall, which is expected as the company makes just about anything you could imagine. In fact, its earnings are at a two-year high. But the mobile division is bleeding money, as the business has reported an $ 82 million loss in Q2 2016.

The LG G5 isn’t as popular as LG hoped it would be, selling only 2.2 million units. I guess a modular feature with only a few accessories that requires removal of the battery isn’t taking off.

Google: Android One program now a part of Rick Osterloh’s hardware division

Google has failed to make strides with the Android One platform in India, but the search giant isn’t giving up on the initiative. The program is now “a part of the broader hardware strategy” and will be under the control of Rick Osterloh, who recently returned to Google to lead its hardware efforts.

Facebook poaches Google ATAP chief Regina Dugan to lead new hardware division

Facebook has hired Regina Dugan, the head of Google’s Advanced Technologies and Projects group, also known as ATAP. Dugan will lead a new group inside Facebook called Building 8, which will focus on building new hardware for the company, according to The Verge.

Dugan says that she is sad to be leaving ATAP, despite her excitement for her new role.

Nest CEO Tony Fadell reportedly defends division during recent Google meeting

Recent press reports of trouble at Alphabet’s Nest subsidiary apparently got so bad that its CEO, Tony Fadell, reportedly made a rare appearance earlier this month at an all-hands meeting at Google.

According to Re/code, Fadell showed up at Google’s “TGIF” meeting on April 1. His appearance came after earlier, but unconfirmed, reports that claimed sales of Nest’s smart devices came in below Google’s expectations in 2015. There have also been claims that Fadell has a poor management style.
