Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S first impressions: Looks great, handles like a dream

We got our hands on a Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S a while back, and for the past week or so I’ve been using it as my daily driver. It released back in April for about $ 530, which puts it in a similar category to OnePlus’ signature price point.

What follows are my generally unfiltered first impressions of the Chinese-made flagship killer, with a full review coming in a few weeks.

The very first thing I noticed when pulling the  [Read More…]

Google Assistant music controls are now everywhere, and it’s a geek’s dream come true

I had precision playback control once, and how I’ve longed to have it once again.

I was the person who always had her headphones snaked up her shirt. I was so attuned to the click wheel on my iPod video — and my iPod mini before that — that I could fast forward and rewind my music without even pulling it out of my pocket with almost frightening precision. I don’t miss much from my iTunes days  [Read More…]

Aerial Dream (or, how to get the excellent Apple TV screensavers on Android TV)

One of the best features of Apple TV can be on Android, too.

The default screensaver on Android TV is fine. Google’s always done well at showcasing photography as a background, and it’s one of those things that makes Android TV so compelling — even when you’re not actively using it, it still looks good.

But Apple TV has taken the screenshot to a whole new ‘nother level with its “Aerials.” We’re not  [Read More…]

Planet Gemini hands-on: The dream of the 90s is alive in Vegas

The Planet Gemini feels like a device from some alternate universe where the Personal Digital Assistant never died. Its eyeglass-case chassis evokes the old Sony Tablet P, while its miniature QWERTY keyboard suggests a laptop that stumbled into a shrinking machine. But its closest relative is probably the Psion PDA from the 1990s — a device beloved as much for its powerful scheduling software as for its robust physical keyboard.

The Planet Gemini is no mere throwback. It’s available  [Read More…]

Adding music to Nanoleaf’s Aurora lights is a dream come true

This is a great first step toward the future of smart lighting.

My biggest complaint about smart lighting is that it doesn’t play nice with the other things in my life. I want the lights to dim and change colors to match what I see on the television, or flash along with my PS4 controller when something exciting happens in a game.

While we know there are a couple of companies eager to see this kind of  [Read More…]

Lenovo Tab 4 10 review: A cord-cutter’s dream tablet

The Lenovo Tab 4 10 is a great, affordable companion for any cord cutter in 2017.

The quick take

Lenovo latest 10-inch tablet isn’t the most powerful workhorse, but then again it was surely never designed to be a device for everything. With modest specs and a budget price, this is a tablet for anyone looking for a reliable second screen to use around the home for streaming music and video, browsing the internet, cooking instructions in  [Read More…]

Google Play Music’s exclusive station for the Galaxy S8 is a Top 40-lover’s dream

Whether you love Danish pop or Nickelback (why?), the New Release Radio plays all the popular hits.

I made a very, very big mistake while shuffling through the Samsung-exclusive radio station on Google Play Music. I forgot that there are a limited number of skips for those of us without monthly subscriptions — and then my last skip landed me on a Nickelback song.

Anyway, if you haven’t already heard  [Read More…]

Aukey’s 30,000mAh portable charger is a power user’s dream gadget

If you need lots of juice on demand and all the ways to deliver it to your phone, you just found what you were looking for.

Aukey sent me their humungous 30,000mAh portable charger to take a look at. I’ve been using it for a week or so as my primary way to keep the phones I’m using charged up, and can say wholeheartedly that this thing is just what the doctor ordered if you’re a  [Read More…]
