The Mi Mix 2S gets a DxOMark score of 97 — the same as the iPhone X

DxOMark says the Mi Mix 2S renders “some of the smoothest files” in low-light, with the camera holding its own next to the Pixel 2 and Galaxy S9.

With hardware becoming commoditized, camera quality is increasingly becoming the differentiator for flagships. That’s where DxOMark comes in — over the course of the last year, the website has become the de facto standard for measuring smartphone cameras. It’s score is often touted by manufacturers during phone launches, and  [Read More…]

Samsung Galaxy S9+ is the best smartphone camera DxOMark has ever tested

This is a great early indication that Samsung has something special here.

Few things changed in the Galaxy S9+ over its predecessor, but the one fundamental shift was in its camera hardware. Going with an all-new sensor, physically changing aperture and a secondary telephoto lens, Samsung knew it had something worth talking about. And according to DxOMark, it worked: the Galaxy S9+ received its highest-ever mobile rating of 99.

The Galaxy S9+ got to that combined score  [Read More…]

DxOMark revamps its mobile testing for the phone cameras of 2017

New testing method will take into account dual cameras, selfie performance, and other recent trends.

The way we use our phones’ cameras has changed a lot since 2012, back when DxOMark first started testing smartphone shooters. Until today, the firm’s scores only take into account a limited subset of the capabilities of modern smartphones — but that’s about to change.

In recent months, DxO has embarked on an extensive data-gathering mission to find out how people use their smartphone  [Read More…]

From the Editor’s Desk: Why DxOMark scores are basically worthless

DxOMark controversy is back in the news this week, but the problem with the mobile camera rating system isn’t as simple as manufacturers ‘buying’ inflated scores.

This week, following a small amount of fanfare, the OnePlus 5 nabbed a DxOMark Mobile score of 87. A day later, as if timed perfectly to demonstrate the flaws of its rating system, DxO gave the LG G6 an 84. And the Internet is suitably riled up. Comment threads suggest something  [Read More…]

OnePlus still wants you to care about the OnePlus 5’s DxOMark score

OnePlus 5’s DxOMark score is about to be revealed, but the phone maker is in a tough spot.

Back in May, before we knew what the OnePlus 5 looked like or whether its camera was a double, the company boasted of a partnership with DxOMark, a popular camera testing platform that companies like OnePlus (and HTC, Samsung, LG, and others) like to use as a way to promote their optical prowess.

Here’s what OnePlus said about the  [Read More…]

Samsung Galaxy S8 camera can’t quite beat the Pixel DxOMark rating

The Samsung Galaxy S8 camera is a great camera, one of the best, but it still wasn’t quite enough to knock the Google Pixel from the top of the DxOMark rankings. DxOMark offers a ranking based on extensive testing of a smartphone camera to a level of detail that most average users don’t worry about. […]

Huawei P10 ranks near top of DxOMark camera tests, but can’t beat the Pixel

Picture this.

The Huawei P10 has a lot to love, especially with a Leica-powered dual camera array and a manageable one hand-friendly size. The setup may be close to last year’s P9, but it’s taken the Mate 9’s excellent 20MP monochrome sensor to give it a big boost in the detail department, coming close to the Google Pixel’s photo quality in DxOMark’s tests.

What exactly does that mean?

In the breakdown of the P10’s setup, DxO  [Read More…]
