Echo, Fire TV, Echo Spot, and more: Everything Amazon announced at its Fall event

That’s a whole bunch of new hardware from Amazon — from new Echoes to a new Fire TV and some crazy little buttons.

Today, Amazon unveiled a boatload of new hardware at a quickie event in Seattle. That’s not to downplay it at all. I’ve been to a lot of hardware events over the years, and this one might well be packed with more new devices than any before.

And, yeah. It can be a bit overwhelming.  [Read More…]

Motorola announces Oreo updates: Moto Z and Moto G5 lines, starting this fall

These are the phones Motorola is committing to updating to Android 8.0.

Motorola has had a … mixed history with software updates. On one hand it’s often been super-quick to get the latest version of Android out to some phones, and on the other it has abandoned lower-end phones far sooner than expected. Today, it announced which of its phones will get the update to Android 8.0 Oreo.

Starting “this fall,” Motorola will roll out the Oreo  [Read More…]

Fall into Autumn with a new leafy wallpaper

Fall is coming, and it cannot fall soon enough.

Summer is hot, and we’re so over it. The scorching heat that makes you sweat all day; the summer flocks of tourists congesting the cities and highways; it can all go away. I’m ready for the kids to be back in school and the temperature outside to not melt things.

Fall is coming, PUMPKINS ARE BACK and the leaves are about to explode from a boring green into  [Read More…]

Watch this Galaxy S5 fall from a plane and survive

Although Samsung has its Active line of Galaxy phones, this standard version held up just fine — after a fall from a plane.

The one time I went skydiving, I wanted to do something to document the experience, more to prove that I actually did it than to remember it. However, I also didn’t want my phone to fall out of my hands and smash into a million pieces on impact. So, I took a few photos as we  [Read More…]

Bixby gets delayed in the US once more, don’t expect it until fall

Unveiled with a lot of pomp back in May, Samsung’s own virtual assistant called Bixby has failed to take off so far. Actually Bixby Voice – its most important part – wasn’t even available at the time of launch of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ – which were first phones to integrate the virtual […]

Amazon Echo vs Google Home: Where today’s best voice assistants fall short

Tell me about the things Amazon Echo and Google Home don’t do.

We talk a lot about the cool things Amazon and Google have pulled off with the Echo and Home speakers, but the one big thing these speakers have in common is room to grow. Neither system is perfect, and the things these speakers get wrong or just plain can’t do are an important metric of what the teams working on these gadgets see as a  [Read More…]

Galaxy Note 8 could be T-Mobile’s coverage secret weapon this fall

Samsung and T-Mobile are scheming to promote the company’s upcoming coverage boost.

The Galaxy Note 8 will likely be the first phone to feature an upgraded version of the modem inside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 platform boasting support for the 600MHz spectrum that T-Mobile just spent $ 8 billion to acquire.

During its first quarter earnings call this week, the company’s CTO Neville Ray revealed that the first 600MHz-supported handsets will be available “before the end of the  [Read More…]

Levi’s will sell its Google-powered connected jacket this fall for $350

Levi’s, in collaboration with Google’s ATAP division, is finally going to put its connected jean jacket on sale this fall.

Two years ago, at Google I/O 2015, Google unveiled a project that it called Jacquard. The idea was simple: use existing fabrics like cotton, nylon, polyester and silk as conduits for touch gestures, using a tiny computer and a Bluetooth radio to transit information to a phone.

At the time, Project Jacquard was just a prototype, but  [Read More…]

Don’t fall for fake versions of Super Mario Run on Android

Before you go downloading a bunch of sketchy files, take a minute and think.

Super Mario Run is now available for iOS which has many iPhone users jumping for joy, but its absence on Android is leaving a lot of users out in the cold. With no official word on when Mario will be making his way to the Play Store, I know some of you are already looking for ways to obtain the game from  [Read More…]
