Hangouts Chat, Google’s Slack competitor, is now available to download

Included as a core G Suite service from here on out.

If you work remotely or in a large organization, chances are your company uses Slack for business-related communication. It’s something we use here at Android Central every single day, and Google’s hoping it can steal away Slack loyalists with the launch of Hangouts Chat.

Hangouts Chat was first announced about a year ago last March, and it was first rolled out as part of an Early  [Read More…]

Yup, Google Hangouts is down

No, it’s not just you.

Google Hangouts has apparently been having sporadic issues today, but it seems as though just about everyone is having troubles with the service now. Over on our end, we’re unable to send or receive messages in Hangouts apps or on the web, even though the website itself loads. More importantly for many of us, this is also causing issues for Google Voice and Project Fi users trying to send SMS.

Hangouts for Android no longer supports SMS as of this week

Don’t say we didn’t warn you – Google confirmed it was ending SMS support in Hangouts back in March. It just feels like Google has gone off  [Read More…]

You should probably start looking for an alternative to Hangouts

The dream of mobile messaging without SMS is dead. At least, for now.

Hangouts is dropping SMS support on May 22, according to an email sent to G Suite administrators. Starting March 27, Hangouts users will get a message explaining the change so there’s time to choose a new app. Weirdly, Google is trying to frame this feature removal as an improvement.

Last year, we announced several improvements to the most popular features of Google Hangouts, such as the  [Read More…]

The end is nigh: Google is ending SMS support for Hangouts in May

In an unconfirmed email to one G Suite user, Google will be discontinuing SMS support for Hangouts in May. However, everything will continue to work normally for Google Voice users.

Google, thinking that splitting apps is a good idea, splits Hangouts.

Today Google announced that it would be splitting Hangouts into two separate experiences; one that focuses on video conferencing in the form of Hangouts Meet, and another that focuses on text-based conversations in Hangouts Chat. If this sounds very familiar, it should – it’s exactly what Google did with Allo and Duo – which, by […]
