Vivo X20 Plus launches with in-display fingerprint sensor and I want one

It’s 2018 and you can buy a phone with a fingerprint sensor underneath the display.

We saw a lot of crazy tech at this year’s CES, and while I wasn’t personally in Vegas to check out everything first-hand, one of the products that caught my attention the most was the Vivo X20 Plus – or, as it’s more commonly known, the first phone with a fingerprint sensor underneath its display.

Vivo X20 Plus with in-display fingerprint sensor launching this week

The first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor is launching in China later this week.

Vivo showed off its first phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor earlier this month, and the company is now ready to put the device into production. The phone of choice is the X20 Plus, which made its debut last September. The phone is now being retrofitted with Synaptics in-display sensor, which is located near the bottom of the display.

In-display fingerprint sensor launching first on a Vivo phone

Vivo will be the first smartphone to use the Clear ID FS9500.

On December 12, Synaptics (one of the biggest names in the biometric industry) announced that it was finally ready to start mass-producing the first-ever fingerprint sensor that’s hidden underneath a smartphone display. Synaptics initially said that this technology would first be available on a smartphone from one of the “top 5” OEMs, and we now know that that OEM is none other than Vivo.

Synaptics announces world’s first in-display fingerprint sensor, launching with ‘top 5’ smartphone OEM

Bezels are about to get smaller, and buttons are about to start going away.

One of the leading biometrics technology companies, Synaptics, has announced a big breakthrough in phone authentication: in-display fingerprint sensors. The new “Clear ID FS9500” (catchy name) fingerprint sensor is designed for smartphones with near-bezel-free displays, and provides fingerprint authentication on demand completely within the display panel itself.

Galaxy Note 8 could debut in late August without in-display fingerprint

August 26 could be Note 8 day — but the phone may miss out on the much anticipated in-display fingerprint sensor.

According to two separate reports, Samsung looks set to unveil the Galaxy Note 8 at a late August event.
