Catalyst Galaxy S9 Impact Protection Case review: Jack of all trades

Catalyst provides excellent protection in a sleek, stylish package.

Way back in 2014, a Kickstarter was launched for an iPhone 4 case called the EscapeCapsule. It was a fully-enclosed waterproof case that went on to collect nearly $ 55,000 in funding from almost 600 backers, and today, the company is known as Catalyst with a case for just about every Apple product you could think of.

This July, Catalyst finally expanded outside of the Apple ecosystem and  [Read More…]

Essential Phone gets new 3.5mm headphone jack module and MQA certification

Essential’s also giving its customers three free months of TIDAL.

One of the big selling points with the Essential Phone was supposed to be a magnetic accessory system that would allow for all sorts of fun modules. The only one that’s actually come to market so far is the 360-degree camera, but now Essential’s confirmed its next accessory is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Similar to the 360-camera, this headphone jack adapter will snap onto the back of  [Read More…]

Fiio BTR1 Portable Wireless DAC Review – No headphone jack, no problem

It’s been a year and a half since we’ve first seen the idea of a headphone jack-free smartphone implemented, with the iPhone 7. For fans of wired audio, it’s been a war we’ve been losing since that time. Several major Android players, like HTC, Motorola, and Sony have unapologetically followed in Apple’s footsteps. Fortunately, Samsung […]

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL could see 3.5mm headphone jack removed

In what seems as a trend in the industry right now with manufacturers removing the headphone jack from smartphones, it seems Google may be following suit with the Pixel 2. Yesterday we saw leaks of the rear of the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL. The renders were only the back of the devices […]

New in-hand Google Pixel 2 leak confirms design elements, missing headphone jack

This is Google’s new phone.

We got our first look at the Google Pixel 2 last week, and now we have a fresh pair of photos showing both sides of the phone that corroborate with the first set. The photos show an early development unit — laden with barcodes, naturally — but in much better lighting with the context of being in-hand.

There’s nothing particularly new or shocking about the hardware here, but it does help  [Read More…]

No headphone jack: dealbreaker or no big deal?

Phones are increasingly arriving without headphone jacks. Is the future unfriendly to music listeners?

The headphone jack — or lack thereof — has become a point of contention for many people since Motorola removed it from its flagship Moto Z in mid-2016. The conversation got even louder when Apple did the same later in the year, and now we have devices like the HTC U11, arguably one of the best phones of the year, and the Moto Z2 Force,  [Read More…]

No, the international Moto Z2 Force doesn’t have a headphone jack

Moto sinks rumors of a 3.5mm headphone jack in the global model.

In the hours following the Moto Z2 Force announcement, rumors have percolated online suggesting that unlike the U.S. models, international versions of the phone, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, would feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. Predictable consternation followed, as it seemed Moto fans in the U.S. might be getting a raw deal — American Z2 Forces, like the earlier Moto Z, use  [Read More…]
