Group calls in Duo might finally be a thing.

Although it still isn’t quite as popular as Apple FaceTime, Google Duo has quickly become one of the best video/audio calling apps around. Google hires former Apple chip architect to lead design on custom processors

The pieces are falling into place for Google to produce its own silicon for future Pixel devices.

Google has made a big move towards developing its own system-on-a-chip (SoC) for its own Pixel devices with the hiring of Manu Gulati, who has been helping develop chips for Apple since 2009. As first reported by Variety, Gulati has just recently updated his LinkedIn page with his new title — Lead SoC Architect at Google.

Dropbox snags former Googler to lead design team

Nicholas Jitkoff joins Dropbox team as VP of Design.

Dropbox has expanding its pool of design talent, announcing Nicholas Jitkoff has joined the company as the new VP of Design. Jitkoff previously led Google’s Material Design team, where he worked on top-level projects across Google’s product groups to create “a coherent design language for Google’s suite of products”. Also on Jitkoff’s resume is his notable work developing the first versions of Quicksilver, a popular productivity application for macOS.

Motorola’s design lead Jim Wicks departs after 15 years

Motorola’s senior vice president of consumer experience design, Jim Wicks, has departed the company to join the faculty at Northwestern University. Wicks had been with Motorola for 15 years and was its head of design for the past 12 years.

Former Motorola leader Rick Osterloh heads back to Google to lead hardware projects

Former Motorola president Rick Osterloh has returned to Google. Osterloh will be in charge of Google’s hardware teams, including Nexus, Chromecast and Google Glass.

Re/code reports:

A Google rep confirmed that Osterloh has joined the company as its newest Senior Vice President, running the new hardware product line and reporting to CEO Sundar Pichai.

Osterloh left Motorola in February, after it was acquired by Lenovo. He previously worked at Motorola while Google owned the company and  [Read More…]

Facebook poaches Google ATAP chief Regina Dugan to lead new hardware division

Facebook has hired Regina Dugan, the head of Google’s Advanced Technologies and Projects group, also known as ATAP. Dugan will lead a new group inside Facebook called Building 8, which will focus on building new hardware for the company, according to The Verge.

Dugan says that she is sad to be leaving ATAP, despite her excitement for her new role.

Lazer Team and PewDiePie lead YouTube’s original programming premieres on Feb. 10

YouTube‘s first original programming is set to premiere on February 10. The $ 9.99-a-month YouTube Red subscription service is offering a reality series staring video game sensation PewDiePie and three movies to start, in addition to the ad-free viewing already offered.

Google launched YouTube Red in October, offering subscribers ad-free videos, a way to save video for watching while offline and more. Come Feb. 10, that will include four upcoming original series and movies:
