ICS tip

Here’s a little tip you may not have known about — while working inside Google’s applications in Ice Cream Sandwich, you can long press any icon and its name will appear.  This can be handy for figuring out what all those fancy new icons mean, and is a heck of a lot better than Jerry’s method of “just press it and see what happens”.  For now, this seems limited to Google’s  [Read More...]

Android Central

British tabloid newspaper The Sun has decided to head down the digital route, with the arrival of its very own subscription-based Android application.

The premise is quite promising if you’re a regular Sun reader. All the “news”, less of the paper. The first month’s subscription will set you back just £0.69, which is low enough to tempt those more sceptical readers to give it a whirl. After this, though, the  [Read More...]

NPD Group has joined the chorus of research firms stating the obvious: Android leads the pack in the smartphone OS wars. Though to be fair, it’s not much of a war in the U.S. anymore. Android grew to a 53 percent market share between January and October 2011. It’s closest competition, Apple’s iOS, grew to 29 percent. So it’s really more of a smartphone  [Read More...]

Comscore released a report earlier this week which covered mobile traffic over the last few months. Thanks, anon!

Well, how about that. What you see in the video above apparently is CyanogenMod 7 booting onto an HP TouchPad. Of course, booting is just the first step in a long line of things that have to happen before we get a working port. Notably, the touchscreen doesn’t yet work. That’s kind of a big one. But booting CM7 is a big step, no doubt. The plan now, apparently, is to work up  [Read More...]

Spotify Announces Long Awaited US Arrival

Way back on October 8th, 2010, my colleague Wiley picked up on sources reporting from Europe that Spotify – the hugely popular online music service – was inching ever closer to finally launching in the US, a development that would put the streaming service in head-to-head competition with Apple’s iTunes.

Nine months later, this “imminent” arrival has finally taken place – or at least, it’s forthcoming arrival has now been confirmed at long last. On Wednesday, Spotify  [Read More...]
