Chromecast is still the best hardware product Google has ever made

Google’s best selling product also happens to be a best-in-class product. Costing only $ 35 means we all can use it, too.

Google has had its hands in a lot of different products over the years. Most of Google’s endeavors have been software-based and some have become wildly popular, like Gmail or Android. Others were a bit more low key — does anyone remember Google Lively? It’s a story shared by many Silicon Valley businesses both large  [Read More…]

Google made the Pixel 2’s portrait mode tech open source

In other words, developers can now harness the Pixel 2’s portrait prowess.

The Pixel 2‘s camera package is excellent for a lot of different reasons, and one of my favorite features is easily its portrait mode. The Pixel 2 continues to create the best-looking portrait-style shots even with phones like the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X out in the wild, and now Google’s doing the unexpected by making it open source.

Portrait mode on the Pixel 2  [Read More…]

Finding something to listen to can be a tricky proposition for any music lover. Do I want something new? Do I want something familiar? Do I want something fun? I made my own Daydream kit for $50 cheaper than Google’s headset

Customization is king in the world of Android.

For those who have ever tried on a Google Daydream, you know that while it is a solid idea, it has some comfort issues. The area and your face lets in a lot of light and the strap isn’t very secure, and although the additional over-the-head strap does help with that a little, it can press on your face in ways and playing for long periods does create a  [Read More…]

Xiaomi made a $100 mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches, and it’s fantastic

Black color scheme. Red LEDs. Cherry MX Blue switches. Xiaomi’s mechanical keyboard ticks all the right boxes.

Xiaomi sells over 2,000 products in its home market, collaborating with local vendors to create a vast ecosystem of lifestyle products. The list of products on sale at Mi Home stores in China include the likes of robot vacuums, smart shoes, affordable smart lights, smart weighing scales, and even luggage.

The new Style Shells are the most expensive at $ 29.99 a pop.

Although they may not be the best phones on the market, you’ve got to give Motorola credit where credit is due for trying something new with its Moto Z devices. The ability to change up both the look and function of your phone on the fly with Moto Mods is still a lot of fun, and Motorola has five new Style Shell Moto Mods to spruce  [Read More…]

Plex just made the best video app for Google Daydream

Plex, the popular home media server application, is now VR ready. Say hello to Plex VR on Daydream.

VR continues to grow in popularity but one thing that’s still not as awesome as it can be is watching your own content. Plex is here to change that with Plex VR, available starting today for Google Daydream. The app is free to download, separate to the main Plex app but with almost all of the same great features  [Read More…]

Microsoft made Android Windows-friendly — but the work is far from done

I’m a big fan of Microsoft’s services and support on Android, but there are still too many Microsoft ecosystem apps and services that are either half-baked or simply not available. Here’s what I’d like to see Redmond do next.

For Windows 10 Mobile users, it has been a painful couple of years. After months of virtual silence, Microsoft unceremoniously announced it was leaving its phone users high and dry, as Windows 10 Mobile entered maintenance mode. No  [Read More…]

Someone made a YouTube app for Android Auto, and that’s a terrible idea

The app’s called ‘YouTubeAuto’ and you can download it now.

Android Auto had a surprisingly big presence at this year’s CES. Wireless connectivity and full Google Assistant support are the two main features that are coming to Android Auto, and now there’s an app you can download that lets you watch YouTube videos while in the car.

The app is called “YouTubeAuto” and it was created by developer Kiran Kumar. You can browse all the latest trending  [Read More…]
