Android Messages gets new Material Theme UI and dark mode with 3.5 update

DARK. MODE. IS. HERE.

Android Messages is one of the best texting apps on the Play Store, and with the new v3.5 update that’s rolling out now, it’s about to get even better.

Similar to Tasks, News, and Contacts, v3.5 refreshes Android Messages UI to match Google’s new Material Theme aesthetic. This means that a lot of Android Messages’ colorful accent colors have been replaced by even more white and the in-app text now uses the Google  [Read More…]

Google Contacts 3.0 adds new Material Theme UI

The update is rolling out to the Play Store now.

Thanks to apps like Google News and Tasks, we’ve steadily been seeing Google’s new design language — Material Theme — come to life. Material Theme is slowly replacing the Material Design standard that was introduced with Lolipop in 2014, and the latest app to adopt the upgraded aesthetic is Google Contacts.

Metal vs. plastic vs. glass: Which is the best phone material?

Three impossible choices.

Phones all look the same once you scrape away a few details. They’re rectangles designed to fit (mostly) into one’s hand and a display where we can tap and poke the things we see to find other things poke and tap. You can even make phone calls with them!

It’s those details, though, that makes the difference. Speakers, bevels, buttons and the physical size are the things that make a Galaxy Note different from  [Read More…]

Google News & Weather app gets a Material redesign and some spitshine

Good news for Google News (& Weather)!

This week’s app update has given Google News & Weather an update that lets it better match the Google News website and better match other Google apps like Google Now and Google Home, brightening things up and cleaning the busy sections drawer a little. It’s not a huge overhaul, but it is a welcoming to see Google updating apps for consistency.

The case for a Material Dark culture on Android

I love hex black and a dark UI!

You Android-lovers can’t deny,

That when an app installs in an itty-bitty space,

With a dark theme in your face,

You get sprung!

Google and Android are filled with white, white, white UIs. It wasn’t always that way, but it is now. The only real dark system UIs available right now are downloadable TouchWiz themes and third-party apps and Google’s apps are whiter than my jeans-365-days-a-year legs. Night modes  [Read More…]

YouTube launching new Material Design interface, including a dark theme

It’s time to bring one of Google’s most successful properties to modern design standards.

YouTube is refreshing its interface across the web and smartphones, undertaking a complete Material Design refresh to make the experience cleaner and easier to focus on videos. The main layout of the website is remaining intact, but the entire look is simpler, flatter and cleaner than ever before — something that should come as no surprise if you’ve used Google’s other websites or Android apps  [Read More…]
