Google reportedly shipped 3.9 million Pixel phones in 2017

Google saw a lot of device shipments in 2017, but it still has plenty of room to grow.

Display controversies aside, Google’s second attempt at making smartphones with the Pixel 2 was mostly successful. The smaller Pixel 2 is still one of the best Android phones you can buy, and thanks to the many improvements Google made to its hardware department from 2016 to 2017, it also saw a nice uptick in sales.

Google sold about 6 million Home speakers during the holidays

More than one Google Home was sold every second.

Equifax says personal data of 143 million customers exposed in cyber attack

Equifax says a cyber attack leveraged against the company has exposed the personal data of approximately 143 million U.S. consumers.

Credit-reporting company Equifax has just announced a major cyber security breach that has exposed the data of approximately 143 million U.S. consumers.

What data was exposed?

The company says the following data was accessed:

names Social Security numbers birth dates addresses driver’s license numbers credit card numbers (approx. 209,000 U.S. consumers) dispute documents (approx. 182,000 U.S. consumers)  [Read More…]

Instant Apps now on 500 million Android devices

Instant Apps now available on 500 million Android devices.

Instant Apps are a way for developers to provide a lightweight, modularized portion of their full app experience when a user opens specific search results. The user has to enable Instant Apps in the Settings menu before the feature will work, however. Announced at Google I/O 2016, the feature was made available to all developers after this year’s I/O.

Xiaomi ships 23.16 million smartphones in Q2 2017, an uptick of 70% from Q1

Xiaomi sees record shipments in Q2 2017 as YoY revenues from India climb 328%.

Xiaomi announced that it shipped 23.16 million smartphones in Q2 2017, making it the best quarter ever for the Chinese company. The company faced a slowdown in sales last year over supply constraints, with CEO Lei Jun announcing a series of broad changes at the end of last year. Merge VR launches $1 million fund to fuel VR and AR developers

There are a lot of great ideas out there — they just need the resources to make them happen.

Hoping to spur VR and AR development to grow the platforms even further, Merge VR has announced it is launching a $ 1 million fund for developers who build for Merge platforms. Several studios are participating in the Merge VR Developer Fund, including React VRX, Draw & Code, Steelehouse Productions and Chicken Waffle.

Cortana now has over 141 million monthly users

One way or another, there are a lot of people using Cortana.

On stage at BUILD today, Microsoft announced 141 million monthly active users for its Cortana assistant. This number is slightly off from the 145m rumored to be sent to prominent Alexa developers in order to lure them over for the Cortana Skill launch, which also happened today, but it’s an impressive figure all the same.

T-Mobile picks up 1.1 million new customers in Q1 2017 as net income rises 46%

T-Mobile continues to gain momentum with its unlimited plans.

T-Mobile has announced that it picked up 1.1 million new customers — 914,000 postpaid and 386,000 prepaid additions from MetroPCS — in Q1 2017. The carrier also saw a 11% increase in overall revenue to $ 9.6 billion, with year-on-year net income increasing by 46% to $ 698 million.

The numbers underscore T-Mobile’s recent momentum in what has been a highly competitive time for the wireless industry.  [Read More…]
