Essential Phone 2 — How Essential can have a much more successful year two

Essential’s biggest task is to learn from the mistakes of the PH-1.

One of 2017’s most polarizing devices was the Essential Phone. There was a lot of hype for the startup headed by Android father Andy Rubin, and while the Essential Phone’s hardware is still some of the best money can buy, continued software bugs and lackluster camera performance continues to put a damper on what should have been one of last year’s best handsets.

Essential’s confirmed  [Read More…]

LG V30S specs: More of the same, plus A.I.

The LG V30S isn’t a brand new phone, but it’s a nice refresh on one of 2017’s best flagships.

The LG V30S builds on the success of the audiovisual-focused V30, and while it adds a few tantalizing specs and a couple of notable A.I. features, it lacks any big-deal upgrades like an improved camera or current-gen Snapdragon processor.

Google takes ARCore mainstream, brings Google Lens to hundreds more phones

Great news for those who live in an augmented reality.

Since its debut at 2017’s Google I/O conference, Google Lens has been impressing users with its ability to parse actionable and useful information from existing photos on the company’s own Pixel phones. It rolled out in October within the Photos app, and then expanded to Google Assistant in November.

At the same time, Google has been touting its augmented reality platform, ARCore, as a simplified and more  [Read More…]

Routines will also be available in the coming weeks.

Shiny new hardware like the Galaxy S9, LG V30S, and other handsets will be the stars of the show during MWC next week, but those aren’t the only things we’ll be keeping an eye out for. A few days before the trade show gets underway, Google’s announced a heap of new goodies that are coming to the Google Assistant throughout the year.

Traveling with tech makes everything more complicated

Don’t know when I’ll be back again.

I will soon be leaving on a jet plane, connecting to another jet plane, and then, a few days hence, a third, fourth, and fifth. Two weeks later, I’ll be doing it all over again.

Traveling isn’t a particularly pleasant activity for most people — the waiting, the scrutiny, the running through terminals, bags flailing, to catch tight connections — but more and more these days, it’s the packing I  [Read More…]

Android phones may soon send more precise location info to 911 dispatchers

Early tests have shown promising results.

911 is a number no one in the U.S. ever wants to call, but in the case that you do, you want emergency responders to get to your location as fast as humanly possible. When you currently call 911, your wireless carrier sends your location info to the 911 dispatcher so they know where to send help. Google’s recently been testing a system of its own to handle this process, and it has  [Read More…]

Qualcomm remains open to Broadcom buyout if offered more cash

When will this back and forth end?

Another day, another possibility that Qualcomm may eventually sell to Broadcom.

Reports of Broadcom being interested in acquiring Qualcomm first appeared in early November of 2017, but Qualcomm’s Board of Directors turned down the initial offering of $ 105 billion. Broadcom came back with a counter-offer of $ 121 billion, but even so, Qualcomm still refused to sell.

On February 16, 2018, Qualcomm’s Chairman of the Board, Paul Jacobs, sent  [Read More…]
