Nexus 6 owners facing Android 7.1.1 to 7.0 downgrade

Downgrade required ‘to guarantee future OTA updates.’

The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Nexus 6 hasn’t gone entirely smoothly so far, with the most recent March 2017 security patch breaking Android Pay on the device. And now in another bizarre development, Nexus 6 owners who updated to 7.1.1 are seeing an over-the-air update back to Android 7.0. Worse still, some are reporting that the downgrade back to 7.0 has caused issues with apps upon completion.

Samsung is making its browser available on Google hardware.

In a bid to deliver faster updates, Samsung decoupled its browser from TouchWiz and started offering it on the Play Store since 2015. The browser was limited to Galaxy phones, but a beta version of Samsung Internet is now being listed on the Play Store with support for the Google Pixel and Nexus devices.

The description for the app states that it is available on all “Galaxy  [Read More…]

Android 7.1.2 beta now rolling out to the Nexus 6P

Android 7.1.2 is out for the Nexus 6P. Here’s how to get it.

The Nexus 6P: Great phone, but occasionally left out of some of the recent Android beta fun.

Last month, when Google announced Android 7.1.2 for a bevy of Nexus devices, along with the Pixels, the Nexus 6P was conspicuously absent from the list, without explanation from Google. Even its cheaper, slower counterpart, then Nexus 5X, was invited.

It’s been a long month for those  [Read More…]

Instant Tethering now available for Pixel and (some) Nexus owners

Google just made tethering dead simple on Pixel and Nexus devices

Instant Tethering is coming to save your tablet’s internet.

Google has just turned on a feature called Instant Tethering, allowing Nexus and Pixel phones and tablets to share internet connections automatically, as long as they are connected to the same Google profile.

Announced on the company’s support forum, the feature is a part of the new Google Play Services (so it may not be available for everyone just yet) and can be accessed through the Settings  [Read More…]

Android 7.1.2 adds fingerprint ‘swipe for notifications’ to Nexus 5X (and probably Nexus 6P)

A small but useful gesture is coming to older Nexus devices.

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P inherited a few of the Pixel’s biggest features when they were upgraded to Android 7.1.1 last year, but one thing the popular devices didn’t receive was the ability to swipe down from their rear fingerprint sensors to open the notification shade — a minor but popular convenience on the Pixel.

Now, despite assertions from Googlers that it may  [Read More…]

Android 7.1.1 was the end of the line for Nexus 6 and Nexus 9

This could be the end of the line for two of 2014’s Nexus devices.

Update: Google has since confirmed to Android Central that neither device will receive Android 7.1.2, but security updates will indeed continue to arrive.

With the release of a small maintenance release, Android 7.1.2, in beta yesterday, speculation kicked up around the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 missing from the list after being included on previous beta releases. At the same time, the Nexus 6P  [Read More…]
