HTC’s latest phone is right around the corner, but its software is already outdated.

CES 2018 is finally coming to a close, and now that we’re done with all the announcements coming out of the show floor, it’s time to dive right back into everyone’s favorite topic – smartphone leaks. Evan Blass recently took to Twitter to shed some light on HTC’s latest handset, the U11 EYEs, and for the most part, it seems like a fairly solid phone.

Moto G4 Play finally has Android 7.1.1 Nougat 13 months later

Who needs Oreo when you have Nougat, right?

Back in 2016, Motorola released three entries in its G-series with the Moto G4, G4 Play, and G4 Plus. The G4 and G4 Plus were both updated to Nougat later in the year, but the same could never be said for the G4 Play. Motorola was running Nougat soak tests for the G4 Play at one point in 2017, but an official over-the-air update was never released.

Now, in  [Read More…]

The latest distribution numbers for Android are out, and Oreo makes its first appearance.

The monthly Android Distribution list is always fun to look at. Over 15% of all Android phones now run Nougat

Nougat is now on more and more devices, but it’s still too early for Oreo.

The monthly Android Distribution list is an important tool for developers to decide what software versions to target for their apps. They’re also cool for us tech nerds that just like to argue what fragmentation actually means. The distribution numbers for September are out, and there are not many surprises.

Right off the bat, Android 8.0 has not been available on enough devices to  [Read More…]

BlackBerry Priv isn’t being upgraded to Android Nougat

BlackBerry’s first Android phone isn’t getting updated past Marshmallow.

Plenty of praise was lavished on BlackBerry’s first Android phone, the Priv, when it debuted in late 2015. In fact, in his review, Russell Holly called it one of the best phones of that year:

This is absolutely one of the best phones to be released this year, and while BlackBerry still has to demonstrate it can keep its promises when it comes to software updates this is already an  [Read More…]

Everyone knows it’s what’s inside that counts.

We’ve all had a good long look at Android Oreo. A few have been using it for the life of the beta and are running it on their phone right now, but most of us are waiting and will continue to wait for a while. One universal truth is that when Oreo comes to phones that sold well and we see millions of people getting it, we’ll hear how it  [Read More…]

Don’t eat the Nougat [#acpodcast]

This week, Daniel, Andrew, and Jerry follow up on Andrew’s second opinion article about the Moto Z2 Force. They also talk about Bluetooth 5, the LG V30, and the installed base of Nougat, which is now at 13.5% of all Android devices. This brings up a great question: Is it better to buy a slightly older “flagship” phone, or a brand new mid-range device?

Lenovo’s Tango-ready PHAB 2 Pro won’t be picking up the Nougat update

Lenovo is abandoning the PHAB series.

Lenovo partnered with Google to roll out the first consumer-ready Tango phone, the PHAB 2 Pro, late last year for $ 500. The phone launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and it looks like that’s where it’ll stay, as Lenovo’s update tracker page mentions that the phone won’t be getting the Android 7.0 Nougat update.

It’s not just the PHAB 2 Pro that is being left behind either. The rest of  [Read More…]
