OnePlus revises their ‘smash’ contest to allow winners to donate perfectly good phones to charity instead

OnePlus’s “smash” contest has drawn to a close, with 140,000 entrants to be winnowed down to 100 winners tomorrow — but they might not have to smash their phone after all. Responding to criticism about the campaign, OnePlus has revised the contest to state that in order to qualify for the $ 1 OnePlus One, winners will have the choice of smashing their old phone, or donating it to the Medic Mobile charity.

ARM anticipates 64-bit Android phones ‘by Christmas’

‘Big uptick in demand for mobile 64-bit products,’ ARM EVP tells CNET

With announcements earlier this year from chipmakers NVIDIA and Qualcomm, there’s clear momentum building behind 64-bit processors in mobile devices. And in an interview with CNET today, ARM’s executive vice president of corporate strategy reveals it’s recently seen a “big uptick in demand for mobile 64-bit products,” with the potential for 64-bit Android products by the end of the year.

Google expecting $50 Project Ara phones for January 2015

Google yesterday revealed that the Project Ara modular smartphone should arrive in January 2015. Known as the “Gray Phone”, it’s deliberately designed to be a generic unit that begs for customization.  Pricing is expected to be around $ 50 for the base device.

Samsung’s first Tizen phones launching in Q2 2014, Android remains ‘main business’

Samsung’s first Tizen powered smartphones are set to hit the market in Q2 of this year according to a report by Reuters. Yoon Han-kil, senior vice president of Samsung’s product strategy team, said that the first phone to launch around the end of the second quarter will be a high end model, with the next a more mid-range effort. He also said that “Android still needs to be our main business.”

Verizon to give discounts to customers with off-contract phones

Verizon is finally going to give you a discount for off-contract phones. Starting April 17th, customers of Big Red are going to be able to bring their own off-contract devices onto shared MORE Everything plans at a discount. No longer will they have to pay a subsidy fee for a subsidy they’re not using.
