Google I/O 2016 will take place May 18-20 in Mountain View, CA

Google has announced that its annual developer conference, Google I/O, will be taking place May 18-20 in Mountain View, CA. Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, took to Twitter to announce that the conference will be going back to the neighborhood where it all started 10 years ago.

IDC: Xiaomi surges to third place in the wearable segment

Xiaomi is now the third-largest vendor in the wearable segment. That’s based on IDC’s sales figures for Q3 2015, which see Xiaomi selling 3.7 million units of its $ 15 Mi Band. The Chinese vendor now has a 17.4 percent market share in the segment, witnessing a growth of an astounding 815 percent from the same period a year ago.

Google’s Alphabet restructure takes place at close of business on October 2

Back in August, Google announced that some changes were going to be taking place, and a new parent company, Alphabet, was being formed. Those changes are finally going to take place at end of business on October 2, as Google’s Investor Relations blog has been updated with a statement from the company about the changes.

Google changes mobile search results to display website names in place of URLs

Google has announced a small, but nonetheless interesting change to the way it displays website URLs in mobile searches today.

Specifically, search results will now display a website’s actual name instead of its URL, along with what Google calls a “breadcrumb-like format” for the URL structure.

Google’s Places API launches on Android, will let you share your location using real place names

The Places API for Android gives developers access to better location pickers, which means that users will soon be able to share their location using real place names instead of latitude and longitude.

Softcard to close its doors on March 31, Google Wallet will take its place

Softcard, the payments service backed by Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and T-Mobile, has announced on its website that it will be cease operations on March 31. Instead of running their own platform, the parties involved will instead utilize Google Wallet, something that proved highly unlikely in the past.
