Google’s Popular Time now tells you how crowded a place is in real time

Don’t you just hate having to go to a shop or a restaurant just to find out it’s teeming with people and there’s no room left for you? Google knows your pain and wants to help. Last year the search giant unveiled Popular Time, a feature meant to let users know when a particular place

Evening brief: Between a Note and a hard place

Software updates, hardware recalls, and Allo’s essential features!

Earlier today, I spoke to Samsung Canada’s COO about the Note 7 recall, and he told me the same thing I’ve heard the company’s executives say in every market: Samsung dealt with the recall properly, quickly, and safely. And that it is sorry.

The question of whether this is going to have lingering negative effects on the Samsung brand isn’t in question: it’s for how long, and how  [Read More…]

Transport Canada advises airline passengers not to place Note 7 in checked baggage

Transport Canada has issued a statement about taking the Galaxy Note 7 on planes following a global recall and subsequent statement from the FAA.

In the statement, the airline regulator recommends Canadians traveling with the beleaguered device “be carried in the cabin, where an incident can be immediately mitigated,” and to avoid keeping the phone in checked luggage where a fire “could easily overwhelm the fire suppression system of an aircraft.”

The move mirrors a similar statement  [Read More…]

Google Search has made it easier to find a great place to eat

Google has announced that users of its Search app for Android will now be able to bring up reviews and “best of” lists of restaurants when they search for a great place to eat.

In a blog post, Google stated:

If you’re craving dim sum, but not sure which place is a top spot, a search for “chinese restaurant” may bring up Michelin favorite RedFarm in the West Village. Looking further at the  [Read More…]

HTC 10 versus iPhone 6s: No place like home (button)

Can HTC regain its position of strength?

The HTC 10 looks nothing like an iPhone. Let’s just get that out of the way.

Its predecessor, or half-sibling — whatever you wish to call the One A9 — resembled the iPhone 6s in more than a few ways, but much was made about nothing. The two phones were made of single blocks of brushed aluminum, with etched speaker ports, front home buttons and, perhaps most egregious on  [Read More…]

HTC Vive reviews are in, and create a fantastic place to compete

Vive day has arrived, and it looks like HTC and Valve have released something fantastic.

News that HTC and Valve would be working together to release a competing VR headset to the Oculus Rift came as a surprise. Despite the constant stream of rumors that Valve was working on VR behind closed doors, HTC seemed like an unlikely partner for this sort of project. Over the last year we’ve seen the HTC Vive go from damned  [Read More…]

Google’s ‘Android Garden’ at MWC: A place to hang out, have a smoothie and Androidify yourself

Google’s recent advertising strategy is a soft sell, and this is a great example of it.

Trade shows like MWC are hard on people. They involve miles upon miles of walking every day, big crowds, questionable food, little rest and lots of monotony on the show floor. At the same time, by design, you’re constantly being sold on something everywhere you turn. Trade shows are work, for sure. And while we love covering  [Read More…]

In a place far far away, at CES 2016 there was Mimoco and Star Wars

In the Milky Way Galaxy ,on a planet called Earth, there was a company called Mimoco looking to balance the forces of battery packs through incredible and fun designs. At CES 2016 in Las Vegas, I came across Mimoco and they make designer portable storage and power packs. These “designer” power packs aren’t surrounded in fancy aluminum, leather or glass, instead they are stuff all of us nerds love, like Stars Wars and Star Trek.

Power packs and USB drives  [Read More…]
