Instagram begins testing new portrait mode feature for Stories

Instagram portrait mode is finally coming! At least that’s what many observant Android developers suspected after a new “portrait shutter icon” file was recently spotted in the app’s code. Instagram confirmed this week that they are currently testing a new camera format called “Focus”.

Google Camera’s Portrait Mode technology from the Pixel 2 goes open source

The Pixel 2 is arguably the best camera experience on Android with Google achieving with software what others require hardware to do. One of these features is the Pixel 2‘s Portrait Mode which identifies a subject and then blurs the surrounding background to provide focus on that subject. Google is using semantic image segmentation to […]

Google made the Pixel 2’s portrait mode tech open source

In other words, developers can now harness the Pixel 2’s portrait prowess.

The Pixel 2‘s camera package is excellent for a lot of different reasons, and one of my favorite features is easily its portrait mode. The Pixel 2 continues to create the best-looking portrait-style shots even with phones like the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X out in the wild, and now Google’s doing the unexpected by making it open source.

Pixel 2 portrait mode can now be used on certain non-Google phones

Thank goodness for ports.

Portrait mode on the Pixel 2 is one of the things that continues to impress me on the phone even after months of using it, and it’s something that was recently ported over to the first-generation Pixel, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X as an update to Charles Chow’s Camera NX app. Now, thanks to another developer by the name of Arnova8G2 on the XDA Developers forums, the Pixel 2’s portrait mode can be used on  [Read More…]

Pixel 2 portrait mode now works on 2016 Pixel, Nexus 6P, and 5X

Available now as part of v7.3 of Camera NX.

It’s no secret that the Pixel 2 has an incredible camera, and one of its standout features is portrait mode. Google’s kept this locked to the Pixel 2 and likely won’t release it to other phones anytime soon, but thanks to the hard work of developer Charles Chow, you can now get portrait mode on your first-gen Pixel, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X.

If Chow’s name sounds familiar,  [Read More…]

Here’s what went down during the December 13, 2017 Essential AMA.

Although Essential has run into a few road bumps here and there throughout 2017, one of the company’s strongest aspects is the level of transparency it has with its fans/customers. The Essential team just held its latest bi-weekly AMA on Reddit on December 13, and as a result, we’ve got some new details on quite a few software features and fixes that are being worked on for the  [Read More…]

Reviewing our first OnePlus 5 photos — primary, telephoto, and Portrait Mode

Camera performance remains one of the most important features of a modern smartphone.

OnePlus is understandably making a big deal of the camera capabilities of the new OnePlus 5. Moving to a dual-camera setup is a big move that gives the OnePlus 5 new shooting options — but at the same time, it means walking a delicate line of keeping the main camera up to speed with the competition.

Here is my first week’s worth of photos  [Read More…]

Snapchat to bring Planet Earth to portrait mode every week

Good news for nature-loving Millennials!

Snap is bringing Planet Earth II, which aired at the tail end of 2016 on BBC, to Snapchat this month.

Each episode has been repurposed into 4 to 6-minute chunks and optimized for Snapchat’s portrait mode-only navigation, and features the same categories from the original show, including Islands, Mountains, Jungles, Deserts, Grasslands, and Cities.

The shorter pieces will also have 3D audio, something that few mobile-optimized pieces of content possess these days.  [Read More…]

Samsung Gear Fit updated with portrait orientation mode

Software fix brings easier readability for Samsung’s sleekest smartwatch

The Samsung Gear Fit is easily the most eye-catching of Samsung’s latest batch of wearables, but the version we saw back at Mobile World Congress came with one big usability gripe — a landscape display on what’s supposed to be a wrist-readable device. Fortunately, though the magic of a software update with a new portrait mode, Samsung now seems to have fixed this issue.
