The great Virtual Reality buyer’s guide

Pick the experience that best suits your needs.

Don’t let this secret slip out, but there’s actually no such thing as “the best VR headset” right now! There are new things in hardware and software being built almost every week, and while it’s easy to look at the newest or shiniest thing and slap a blue ribbon on it there’s a lot more going on.

At the same time, there are a lot of folks eager to  [Read More…]

Huawei VR2 aims to be the one-stop headset for phone and PC virtual reality

Huawei is taking another swing at virtual reality, both in viewing and creation.

Huawei’s VR2 headset was unveiled officially in late 2017, but CES 2018 served as a Western debut and the first chance for most people to get their eyes and hands on one. This is Huawei’s second take on virtual reality, and it comes in partnership with IMAX (perhaps you’ve heard of that) instead of Google — yes, this VR headset doesn’t run Daydream.

5G gets closer to reality as initial standard is finalized

5G is a little bit closer to being the real deal.

We keep hearing about the impending launch of 5G, but the reality is that the reported 2019 launch is still quite far away. In the meantime, work continues behind the scenes to ensure that, when carriers and phone manufacturers are ready to roll it out, they know exactly what they’re working with.

To that end, a 5G milestone was hit today at the 3GPP RAN Plenary  [Read More…]

Best Gifts to Experience Virtual Reality

Invite someone to step into a new reality for a while.

There’s nothing wrong with a good old fashioned escape. Some people use books, some binge watch all of Westworld in an afternoon, and of course we all know someone who gets sucked into a game for a while. The key to any good escape is feeling immersed in the world you’re gazing into, and that’s one of the things you’ll find is much easier to do  [Read More…]

Explore real savings with Oculus Rift + Touch virtual reality for $349

The worlds are fake, but the savings are real.

The Oculus Rift and Touch Virtual Reality System is down to $ 349 on Amazon. This bundle normally goes for $ 400. The last time it had a direct price drop this low was over the Black Friday weekend. Other than that, the best deals we’ve seen usually involve buying it at full price and getting a gift card. I’d rather get the discount, myself.

Features include:

Now Sony announced a partnership with online 3D printing and digital […]

This week, Daniel Bader and Jerry Hildenbrand are joined by VR expert Russell Holly to talk about Moto Z2 Force reviews and several other newly announced Moto phones. Thanks to some recent leaks, we know even more about the Galaxy Note 8 and upcoming LG V30.

Google’s Tango and Apple’s ARKit approach augmented reality from opposite sides

If you ask half the tech world right now, Apple is on the verge of inventing augmented reality.

While some degree of eye-rolling is appropriate, it is true that ARKit is going to accomplish something special by being available on such a large number of phones and tablets with nothing more than a software update. It’s the kind of thing that gets Android owners wondering why Google didn’t go this route, choosing instead to invest so heavily  [Read More…]

The future of augmented reality may actually be in shopping apps

How the technology is implemented matters more than the device it arrives on.

We’ve already established that it’s the pervasiveness of online shopping apps killing the shopping mall. But what about augmented reality? Could that change the way we purchase things in the future?

I spent an hour this week at a pop-up showcase for the ASUS ZenFone AR. It’s been nearly eight months since the smartphone was announced, and though we still don’t have a launch  [Read More…]
