More detailed satellite images headed to Google Maps and Earth

Google will begin using the Landsat 8 satellite and new processing techniques to get even better shots of the earth than before. With Landsat 8, Google will be able to capture around two times as many images as it could with Landsat 7. Back in 2003, Landsat 7 experienced a hardware failure which resulted in a loss of image quality and diagonal gaps of missing data.

Google gives non-profits real-time satellite imaging data for free

Google acquired satellite startup Skybox earlier this year, and now the search giant has announced the Skybox for Good program, through which Google will provide non-profit organizations and projects access to real-time satellite imagery.

DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket on Android phones, tablets requires no satellite dish

In a bold move supporting cord cutters, satellite provider DirecTV is allowing users to stream NFL Sunday Ticket games to their personal devices without requiring a satellite dish in the process. Streaming will work on compatible Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Macs and PCs, as well as Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console depending on the package you sign up for.

Google buying satellite firm Skybox Imagery for $500 million

Google is buying the satellite imagery company Skybox Imagery for half a billion dollars. Google has used imagery from Landsat satellites for much of their mapping images, though in recent years they’ve been replacing that with detailed orbital shots from a variety of sources. Adding a satellite imaging company to their portfolio will enable Google to more quickly and accurately update their satellite maps.
