Xiaomi overtakes Samsung to become the largest smartphone brand in India

Xiaomi ends Samsung’s six-year dominance in India.

Xiaomi tied with Samsung for the top spot in India’s handset segment late last year, and with the momentum strongly in favor of the Chinese manufacturer, it was only a matter of time before it overtook Samsung. That day has arrived, as Xiaomi is now claiming that it is the largest smartphone brand in India on the back of Q4 sales.

The claim is backed up by numbers from  [Read More…]

Are you interested in a foldable smartphone?

Here’s our forum users’ take on foldable smartphones.

For years, the mobile industry has been filled with rumors at one point or another about foldable smartphones. This is one of those talking points that continues to rear its head every now and then, but 2018 could be the year that this tech finally comes to light.

ZTE released the first “foldable” smartphone we’ve seen in a while with the Axon M last year, but it featured two  [Read More…]

What smartphone are you carrying right now?

These are the phones our forum members carry on a daily basis.

If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, it’s awfully hard these days to buy something that you’ll be disappointed with. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is an excellent handset for people that want a phone that can do everything (and then some), the Google Pixel 2 has the best camera ever seen on a phone, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro offers stupendous battery life, etc.,  [Read More…]

The U.S. smartphone industry has an LG problem

LG needs to rebuild, but it may be too late.

A few years ago, I was in New York for the launch of the LG G3. It was the first phone I’d touched with a Quad HD display and was pretty well built (though plastic) and fairly fast (though not the fastest) and overall people seemed pretty happy with the phone. That year, the company went on to sell over 10 million of them, so LG must  [Read More…]

More smartphone manufacturers should rethink their release cycles

At this year’s CES, we learned about a disruption to our annual smartphone release expectations. LG, which is usually one of the first out the gate with a new G-series flagship, has put the brakes on the way that its mobile division does things. This is rather unheard of from a major smartphone player. Being […]

ZTE aims to have a 5G smartphone on the US market by early 2019

Even if ZTE didn’t have much to show at CES 2018, the company still has big plans for the US market. In a recent Bloomberg interview, ZTE’s chief executive officer, Lixin Cheng revealed plans for a 5G-capable smartphone which should make it on the US market by the end of 2018 or early 2019. Obviously, […]

The Moviphone is a smartphone that doubles as a movie projector

Being able to use your smartphone as a movie projector is not a novel idea. Motorola offers the InstaShare Projector Moto Mod which can project images as large as 70-inches, but the caveat here is that these modular components only work with a Moto Z handset. For those who don’t own a Moto Z, but […]

Samsung said to start producing foldable smartphone in November

We could be looking at a launch as early as December.

For years, we’ve dreamed of the day when we can own a smartphone that’s able to fold in on itself. This would allow us to carry phones with large displays and easily carry them in our pockets when not using them, but perhaps more important, the idea of using a phone that you can fold is just plain cool.

There have been murmurings of foldable smartphones  [Read More…]
