Sorry, the headphone jack isn’t coming back

And it’s going to be okay. Really.

Throughout the process of writing the Galaxy Note 10+ review, from our initial first impressions updates to publishing my final definitive version, it was extremely interesting to see just how little outcry there was regarding the loss of the 3.5 mm headphone jack. Be it in the article comments, in our forums, or on Twitter, people had plenty to say about everything … except the physical audio interface.

Bixby isn’t dead or going away anytime soon — sorry

Samsung can’t let Bixby die because it’s about far more than just the on-phone assistant.

Every time someone mentions Bixby within the context of the smartphone enthusiast crowd, it’s typically met with a range of responses from a laugh to downright disgust. Our guide for how to disable Bixby on your phone, which nominally targets more casual Galaxy owners, is incredibly popular. If you look at these signals, it leads to a general feeling that Samsung is  [Read More…]

Sorry, a Moto Z3 Force is not coming this year

Motorola unveiled the Moto Z3 yesterday, but instead of getting fans excited, it caused quite a disappointment.  Except for the 5G Mod, the Moto Z3 represents a minimal upgrade over last year’s Moto Z2. It’s even powered by the same processor, the Snapdragon 835 and costs less than the middle-range Moto Z3 Play ($ 499 vs $ 480).

But it’s okay. A more powerful Moto Z3 Force is coming, right? A flagship to compete with the likes of the Samsung  [Read More…]

Sorry, Galaxy S8 users: Bixby voice assistant remains delayed

The Wall Street Journal reports we won’t see it until “at least late June.”

There are so many features the Samsung Galaxy S8 has going for it; it’s almost bezel-less, it has the best display on the market, and it’s a wondrous performer. But one thing it does not have going for it is its own virtual assistant. It’s been two months since the launch of Samsung’s big phone release and there’s still no Bixby in sight.

Sorry, Verizon users: Bixby is even more crippled on the Galaxy S8

Adding insult to injury, half of Bixby Vision’s functionality doesn’t yet work if you’re on Big Red’s network.

We’re all a little bummed about Bixby. Samsung’s version of its virtual assistant isn’t everything we’d hoped it would be, especially from a company as big and as established as one of the world’s major smartphone manufacturers. And to make matters worse, Verizon users won’t be able to use half of the one part of Bixby that works — Bixby Vision.

Sorry folks, no budget Pixel 2 is coming this year

In January the first information related to the upcoming Pixel 2 surfaced online. We were told the successor of Google’s 2016 flagship phone will probably be waterproof and might come in a more affordable variant as well – something which probably got Nexus nostalgics quite excited. While this information apparently came from a “reliable source”, […]

Sorry folks, Verizon 128GB Pixels XLs ordered in November will ship in March

Remember we told you the 128GB Pixel XL was in high demand at Verizon? The carrier started sales of the Pixel in October 2016, but those who ordered the beefier Pixel XL model were notified their phone might not arrive until early 2017. Well it appears Verizon is still having a hard time keeping up

Sorry, the OnePlus Australia website is fake

We know you want to see OnePlus sales in Australia, but this isn’t going to help.

OnePlus has yet to bring its phones to Australia, and it still doesn’t have any public plans to do so despite the appearance of a new oneplus.com.au website. Going to that URL sure looks legit, closely mimicking the main OnePlus website design and saying “We’re Bringing OnePlus to Australia” — but as Ausdroid found, the website actually has no affiliation with OnePlus at  [Read More…]

From the Editor’s Desk: Saying sorry

Some Sunday thoughts from cottage country.

It’s hard to say sorry. Big companies especially need to get better at it. Hell, I’m Canadian and say it all the time and still need to get better at it.

What struck me about this whole Note 7 mess is that Samsung just hasn’t made people feel good enough about its response. It did all the right things — got the phones back en masse, issued new ones quickly,  [Read More…]

The sad, short, sorry saga of the Galaxy Note 5 S Pen

The echo chamber that is the tech journalism crowd (card-carrying member right here) has taken what started with a chuckle and turned into a full-fledged -gate the story of the Samsung Galaxy Note S Pen — and the fact that it’s very much possible to get it stuck in the body of the phone. There’s a lot of joking and plenty of gnashing of teeth — some warranted, some the usual Twitter fodder.

So let’s get down to it.
