The LG G6 ThinQ is an old phone, rebranded rather than reborn

The LG G6 ThinQ is LG’s flagship from last year with the addition of new AI camera features. LG’s decision to rebrand one of its most unpopular phones is probably for marketing purposes, though it seems rather unnecessary.

Chromebook vs. iPads: Closer than ever to being actual computers

The future of Chrome OS is to compete with the iPad, but it’s a long fight.

It should be abundantly clear by now that Android tablets are never going to catch on. Instead, it looks more and more like Google is positioning Chrome OS with Android apps to fill that space. Chromebooks have been tremendously successful in the quest to replace the traditional computer over the last couple of years, especially in school settings. At the same  [Read More…]

The Galaxy S9 has dramatically faster LTE than the iPhone X, but that isn’t the whole story

The Galaxy S9 may be 42% faster than the competition, but that’s not as impressive as it may sound.

As technology advances and more of what we do transitions to the internet and cloud, it’s increasingly more important to carry smartphones that offer reliable LTE performance. Samsung recently revealed that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ have demonstrated LTE speeds that are up to 42% faster than competing handsets in real-world conditions, and while that might sound like a seriously  [Read More…]

Project Treble is turning out to be more important than we thought

We’re already seeing the fruits of Google’s labor with Treble and Android P.

While we’re all busy arguing about Android P’s gestures and swooning over the new features, something far more exciting didn’t get the attention I think it deserves: seeing the first fruits of Google’s labor with Project Treble. In a completely unexpected move, Google released the first beta version of Android P for not only its own Pixel phones, but also phones from seven different  [Read More…]

Are Google’s Pixel phones better than Samsung Galaxy ones?

Google’s got its sights set on Samsung’s throne.

If you venture out to buy a new smartphone, there’s an awfully good chance you’ll pick up one made by Samsung. Between its Galaxy S flagships, Note phablets, and abundance of budget handsets, Samsung’s secured itself as one of the biggest players in the smartphone world for a number of years.

Despite Samsung’s dominance, Google’s quickly trying to make just as big of an impression with its Pixel phones.  [Read More…]

6 months after Pixel 2 launch, Google has nothing to say of its success — but hardware focus is bigger than ever

Other parts of the hardware and operating system business take the spotlight instead.

Alphabet just released its Q1 2018 earnings, and I followed along with the earnings call afterward to pick up further context on the numbers from Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The most striking thing from the call, at least as it pertains to us here in the Android world, is that the word “Pixel” was used only once — mentioned as an aside when talking  [Read More…]
