LG’s mobile unit sees a sales decline in Q2 2017 as demand for the G6 wanes

LG’s overall profit margins take a hit as mobile unit posts a $ 117 million loss.

LG’s mobile unit recorded a strong 10% increase in sales in Q1 2017, but the resurgence was short-lived. In its second quarter earnings, LG noted that its mobile unit recorded a loss of $ 117 million (132.4 billion won) on revenues of $ 2.39 billion (2.70 trillion won).

Alphabet posts revenue of $26 billion as hardware unit gains momentum

Alphabet’s Other Bets are starting to pay off.

Google’s parent company Alphabet posted Q4 2016 earnings of $ 26 billion, an increase of 22% from the $ 21.3 billion it netted during the same period in 2015. Profits also saw a healthy increase to $ 5.3 billion, up $ 300 million from last quarter.

Sony records $205 million profit in Q2 2016, mobile unit finally in the black

Sony has posted its financial results for the quarter ending in June, announcing a modest $ 205 million (¥21.2 billion) operating profit. That’s down from the $ 780 million (¥84.2 billion) recorded during the same period last year. One of the company’s image sensor factories was affected by an earthquake earlier this year, leading to an overall revenue decline of 11% to $ 15.6 billion (¥1.61 trillion).

LG posts Q2 profit in spite of $132 million loss from the mobile unit

LG has announced its Q2 2016 earnings, recording an operating profit of $ 503.1 million (584.6 billion won) over revenues of $ 12.05 billion (14 trillion won). Strong sales of home appliances and TVs offset the mobile unit’s operating loss of $ 132 million.

Sony’s U.S. mobile unit reportedly cuts jobs, moves offices to San Francisco

Sony’s troubled mobile division took another hit this year, but in a very discreet way. A new report says that the company’s U.S. mobile division moved its offices from Atlanta to the San Francisco area and that change also caused an unknown number of layoffs.

According to Re/code, Kunihiko Shiomi, the previous head of U.S. mobile development at Sony, was quietly promoted to president of the division in January:
