This is how the pop-up selfie camera works on the Vivo NEX

The Vivo NEX’s front-facing camera is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in years.

Vivo may not be that well-known here in the U.S., but on June 12, the company unveiled what’s easily one of the most interesting phones we’ve seen in 2018. The Vivo NEX is the closest we’ve gotten so far to a truly “bezel-less” smartphone, and to achieve this, Vivo did something awfully unique with the front-facing camera.

Here’s a look at the next evolution of smartphone hardware.

Vivo isn’t a name we hear about in Western markets, but it’s a huge force in India and China — and most of us were introduced to the brand when it showed off a crazy concept phone at MWC 2018. This is the retail version of the Apex concept phone we saw at MWC.

Soon, that concept will be turned into a product you can actually buy.

Blu’s flagship smartphone experience for the first half of 2018 is another solid bang-for-buck proposition. It’s not perfect, and has a few questionable choices, but you’ll have a tough time besting the Vivo X at its price.

“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

The above quote from Jurassic Park‘s Dr. Ian Malcom is one of my favorite lines from the movie, and if there’s ever been a time where it applied to the smartphone space, it’s now. Pictures of a presentation from Vivo were recently uploaded to Chinese social network Weibo, and they suggest that the company’s latest phone – the Vivo Xplay7  [Read More…]
