Wear OS gets helpful “Tiles” widgets for improved user experience

Google, in its continual process to refine and enhance the Wear OS (formerly Android Wear), experience, has rolled out a new feature for its wearable platform.

The latest change, Tiles, are glanceable widgets that can be swiped for information. Users can swipe to the left to pull up the tiles which can include details such as weather, calendar appointments, heart rate, news headlines, timer, and more.

Wear OS’s interface is changing once again with the introduction of Tiles

They’re replacing the dedicated Google Fit page.

Late last year, Google launched Wear OS 2.0 — a huge overhaul for its wearable operating system that aimed to make Wear OS simpler and easier to use. A big part of Wear OS 2.0 focused on new swipe gestures, and with another update that’s rolling out now, Google’s slightly tweaking how these work with the introduction of Tiles.

Google Fit launches on iOS with support for Wear OS and Apple Watch

It’s available to download starting today.

Last year, Google completely overhauled Google Fit with a much-needed update. It’s been a great experience so far on Android, and as of April 24, it’s now heading to iOS.

Similar to Google Fit on Android, the iOS app tracks your activity in two main categories — Heart Points and Move Minutes. Heart Points are earned for intensive workouts and Move Minutes add up throughout the day as you keep moving.

Wear OS accounts for less than 12% of the U.S. smartwatch market

Apple, Samsung, and Fitbit make up 88% of all smartwatch sales.

While the smartphone market may be sitting at a standstill right now, the smartwatch market is currently growing. According to an analysis from research firm NPD, dollar sales of smartwatches in the U.S. increased by a massive 51% in November 2018 compared to November 2017 — resulting in total sales of $ 5 billion. As for unit sales, those saw an even larger 61% increase.

Louis Vuitton has a new Wear OS watch that starts at £2,125

This is only the third watch with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100.

Since the debut of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor for Wear OS, we’ve only seen two watches actually ship with it.
