This year, CES is going to get weird

I, like many of my peers, have a love-hate relationship with CES. I’ll spare you the diatribe about overcrowding, or traffic, or the garish lights and artificial air of the Las Vegas strip — if you’ve been there, you either love it or hate it.

But in years past, whether I was reporting more broadly for MobileSyrup or focused on Android for AC, there seemed to be a particular trend or movement — mobile, VR, AR, wearables, smart  [Read More…]

The latest Mods for the Moto Z line bring a slide-out keyboard and blood pressure monitoring to the party.

Motorola’s not backing away from the Moto Mod ecosystem, adding a mini slide-out keyboard and a health monitor to the line-up of capability enhancing add-ons for the Moto Z. We got to try out the two newest: the Lenovo Vital Moto Mod and the Livermorium Slider Keyboard Moto Mod.

Zizo cases for the Galaxy Note 8: Rugged, stylish, and a little bit weird

Zizo makes some uniquely designed rugged cases for the Note 8.

Starting at over $ 900, the Galaxy Note 8 is as expensive as flagship phones come. Keeping the Note 8 protected at all times will likely require a case rugged enough to withstand everything that life throws at you along with a tempered glass screen protector, too.

If you know you’ll need that full protection Zizo shipped us their full line of cases for the Note  [Read More…]

Eharmony and Alexa team up to make finding a date that much more weird

I’ve been married for 13 years next week. I can’t even imagine what it’s like to do that in the age of smartphones and dating apps and Instagram and text messages. I am old.

Also: There’s now an Amazon Alexa Skill that ties eharmony to your Amazon account. So you can find more info on potential lifelong partners without even having to pick up your phone, or log into a computer.

Or, as eharmony puts it:

It’s a  [Read More…]

Android experiments bring out the weird side of Google I/O

A co-operative virtual reality game, an easily trainable neural network, and multiplayer Quick Draw! — come take a peek at some of the experiments on display at Google I/O 2017.

What’s the best way to show off Google’s varying underlying technologies? Make them fun to use!

Every year at I/O, Google dedicates a portion of the show floor to experiments submitted by various developers from around the world. I managed to find some time to try a majority of  [Read More…]

The Moto G5 Plus home screen shows just how weird Google’s chat strategy is right now

Boot up a fresh new Moto G5 and get ready to be at least a little confused.

Check out the home screen for a new Moto G5 Plus and you’ll find the usual Google Apps folder full of bloatware useful Google-made apps, and on the other side of the Moto app you’ll find an icon for Google Duo. We know that Google exercises quite a bit of control over how an Android phone with the Google Play Services onboard  [Read More…]

Insta360 Air review: Here, have a weird (pretty good) selfie camera

Finally, a plug and play 360-degree camera.

As much as I love taking photos with my trusty Ricoh Theta, it’s not the easiest thing in the world to use. I have to remember to keep it charged, the Bluetooth connection with my phone can occasionally be a little finicky, and while it’s thin enough to be pocketable it’s also long and needs a protective sleeve to keep the lenses safe. Most other 360-degree cameras are worse, especially  [Read More…]

Galaxy S8 ‘eyewitness renders’ show new edge displays and that weird fingerprint sensor location we all already hate

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S8?

The Galaxy S8 isn’t yet official, but we’re learning more and more about what it will look like, and design decisions — for better or worse — Samsung has made.

The latest comes from CNET Korea which has procured a Galaxy S8 “eyewitness” who helped them create renders of the upcoming phone. There are several key differences here that others who claim to have seen it or have seen the parts that will  [Read More…]

Let’s talk about the Galaxy S8 and weird usability issues

Seriously? They put the fingerprint scanner there???

The leak of the first live images of the Samsung Galaxy S8 has given us lots to talk about. Despite obvious family traits, the Galaxy S8 represents the biggest design overhaul since the GS6 — with a wacky new, math-defying aspect ratio (18.5:9!), no clicky home button, and talk of the new Bixby AI assistant getting its own special key on the side.

While I hesitate to pass judgment based  [Read More…]

SteamVR through Google Cardboard is weird and kinda great!

You can play SteamVR games with Google Cardboard, but be careful.

Trying VR is the first and best way to get someone excited about VR, but that raises some interesting challenges. The HTC Vive isn’t exactly what you’d call portable, and carting around the $ 600 Oculus Rift alongside your very expensive PC still isn’t a great option. If you find yourself without a VR headset, yet still curious about the experience, there’s a DIY project  [Read More…]
