Hey, iPhone users, Samsung and LG won’t slow down your old devices

By now you’ll have heard the news that Apple purposely slows down older iPhones to reduce the CPU power to account for degraded batteries. Apple acknowledged such practices and said it was to protect against unwanted shutdowns, and not to encourage users to upgrade to the latest and greatest, faster, iPhones. Huge manufacturing companies aren’t […]

Customers can now place an order for the Black or White version for $ 129.99 a pop on Amazon. The mini speaker actually appeared on the Amazon website around Thanksgiving, but it […]

YouTube TV won’t come to Roku or Apple TV until 2018

The app is scheduled for a launch in Q1 of next year.

This past November, YouTube TV finally started making its way to the big screen. The app first launched on Android TV and Xbox One consoles, and this was soon followed up with a release on select Samsung and LG smart TVs. Two of the biggest platforms still missing out on YouTube TV are Roku and Apple TV, and it looks like we’ll have to wait a while  [Read More…]

The LG V30 has an amazing camera, but it won’t make you a great photographer

7,000 miles from home is no place to realize that you’re a bad photographer with no real knowledge of photography.

Five years ago, I was flown to Seoul to cover the launch of a brand new smartphone line. Business class, on Korean Air. In my gear bag was a brand new, full-frame DSLR. It cost well over $ 1,000 and was a pretty big step up from the prosumer model I’d been using pretty well until then.

You won’t be able to repair the Essential Phone

The Essential Phone proves nearly impossible to repair, earning a 1/10 score from iFixit.

Part of the reason the Essential Phone stands out from the crowd is its unique materials. There isn’t any other device on the market using a titanium frame or ceramic back, due to how difficult these materials are to source. Besides just being sturdy and adding to shipping delays, the unique materials also mean the phone will never be user-servicable.

iFixit did its  [Read More…]

The Note 8 and the LG V30 won’t have Oreo at launch but does it really matter?

It depends on just who you ask.

So we’re going to be able to buy the Note 8 or the LG V30 (or both) soon. They have more in common than being the “luxury” model from the companies who make them: they are both launching with Android Nougat instead of Oreo. How much does this really matter, and to whom?

These two phones are important to the companies selling them, the people who will be buying them,  [Read More…]

Lenovo’s Tango-ready PHAB 2 Pro won’t be picking up the Nougat update

Lenovo is abandoning the PHAB series.

Lenovo partnered with Google to roll out the first consumer-ready Tango phone, the PHAB 2 Pro, late last year for $ 500. The phone launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and it looks like that’s where it’ll stay, as Lenovo’s update tracker page mentions that the phone won’t be getting the Android 7.0 Nougat update.

It’s not just the PHAB 2 Pro that is being left behind either. The rest of  [Read More…]
