Android welcomed 3.7 million new devices this weekend

A lot of people were in the Christmas spirit over the holiday weekend. As a matter fact, a lot of people were in the Android Holiday spirit and bought their loved ones a new Android device. Flurry Analytics estimates that there were 6.8 million new Android and iOS devices activated on Christmas day based on the download numbers of apps that it monitors.

Early this morning, Andy Rubin revealed some more specific numbers: on December 24 and 25, there were 3.7 million Android devices activated. That’s quite the jump from the 700,000 activated on a regular day. It’s actually 2.6 times higher than the average daily increase. Though Google didn’t hit 1 million daily activations consistently like we thought it would, Android did reach that peak at least once this year.

It’s no surprise that so many new Android devices were brought into the fold. Like Android’s natural growth, the numbers were up significantly in many parts of the world (though not everywhere since not everyone in the world celebrates Christmas). Analytics firm Localytics estimates that the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, and Australia were the top five countries with the most Android activations. Sweden, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Spain, and Brazil rounded out the Top 10 (Spain and Brazil were neck and neck, and practically tied.)
