The Amazon Kindle Fire launches next week with thousands of apps available through the just re-launched Amazon Appstore for Android. Amazon just sent us a note that Hulu Plus and ESPN Scorecenter will be among the big names of apps joining the lineup of Fire options.

However, according to tech mover and shaker Robert Scoble, not all Android apps will be compatible with the Kindle Fire. Scoble made a comment on Google+ that a developer showed him an amazing Android app for phones and tablets that almost made him want to “turn in his iPhone.” The only problem was that when he asked about the Kindle Fire, the developer responded, “Nope, Amazon is keeping our app from running.”

According to Scoble and the developer in question, Amazon “turned off” certain API’s available on other Android devices. Since some developers rely on these API’s, not all of the Android apps you love now or will come to love in the future will be compatible with the Kindle Fire. We saw similar problems emerge when the Nook Color excluded thousands of apps because it lacked hardware compatibility. Amazon allegedly disabled certain features that would have allowed some developers to support the Kindle Fire and make it the full-featured, affordable tablet of many Android users dreams. Based on the number of titles in the App Store, I’m guessing it’s a small portion of apps that will be left in the cold.

I put in a request for comment from Amazon and am waiting a response, but I doubt this will affect the Kindle Fire. The Fire is a mass market device that appeals most to people who don’t care about being able to access only 2,000 apps instead of 4,000. There will still be plenty of songs to listen to, movies to watch, and games to play. That’s the bottom line for most of Amazon’s target market. Here’s a list of some of the big name apps Amazon promises will be available at the Kindle Fire launch.
