OnLive has arrived for Android to fulfill its “access everywhere” promise. The cloud-based gaming system that plays console-level games without needing a console or large download is now available for a select class of Android phones and tablets. (Canada not yet officially supported.)

With OnLive, players get access to popular games, like LEGO Batman and Split Second, wherever they are. The service stores games in the cloud and uses Wi-Fi or mobile networks to quickly render graphics and gameplay remotely. That allows players to get fast-action gameplay wherever they are. Someone can start playing an OnLive game on their television or PC, and then pick up the pace on their tablet as long as that game supports touch graphics. Purchasing the OnLive Wireless Controller will open up playing options to all games in the company’s library, provided your device supports the controller.

Some of the same games played on consoles are available in OnLive. Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Batman: Arkham City, Call of Juarez, Lord of the rings: War in the North, and NBA 2K 11 are among the included titles. Members pay $ 5.99 to $ 49.99 to make a game playable on their account, or they can sign-up for a PlayPack Bundle that offers more than 100 select games and discounts for $ 9.99 per month. The library options are not as robust as what you’ll see walking into GameStop, but it’s impressive when you consider that purchasing an OnLive title means it will be available at home or on the go.

Sign-up for the service and download the app from the Android Market to get started. A free trial is available in case you want to test the service first. The ingenious solution is limited on 3G, but 4G LTE and Wi-Fi should provide stable performance. OnLive requires Android 2.3 or higher, and has so far been confirmed to work with these devices:

  • Acer Iconia Tab A500, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Sony Ericsson Tablet S, Toshiba Thrive,
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung Galaxy S II 4G
