Android Oreo is now on 0.7% of devices, but Marshmallow is still king

Android Oreo is very slowly but surely climbing in usage.

Google releases the Android Distribution numbers once per month to let developers know which OS versions to target, and January’s numbers are now available. Not surprisingly, Marshmallow is still on top with 29.7% of the Android pie.

Oreo did make some gains, though. Android 8.1 is making its first appearance with 0.2% of the Android marketplace, while Android 8.0 stayed at the same 0.5% it was at  [Read More…]

Android Oreo now on 0.5% of devices, Marshmallow still largest at 29.7%

Here’s the state of Android in December 2017.

Google recently released the latest Android Distribution numbers, and this is the last one we’ll get for 2017. A lot of what we’re seeing this time around is more of the same, but one area that might look disheartening is Android Oreo’s current adoption.

At this time, Oreo 8.0 (not even counting 8.1 that was recently released to Nexus and Pixel devices) only makes up 0.5% of all Android  [Read More…]

Nougat makes steady gains in August distribution numbers, but so does Marshmallow

Nougat is gaining momentum, but the going is slow.

The latest Android distribution numbers put Nougat adoption — including both 7.0 and 7.1 — at 13.5%, an increase of 2% from a month prior. Android 7.0 Nougat is installed on 12.3% of active Android devices, while 7.1 accounts for 1.2%.

An interesting trend over the last two months has been the rise of Marshmallow devices. After holding steady at 31.2% in both May and June, Marshmallow  [Read More…]

Google Assistant rolling out to Android Marshmallow and Nougat phones

Before the end of February, Google confirmed to those with Android Marshmallow and Nougat devices that they’d have access to Google Assistant soon. Turns out, that is indeed the case.

Google has just launched a YouTube video welcoming Assistant to those handsets. The video is a standard promotional clip, with the Assistant icon popping up on devices that have access to the digital personal assistant (there are a lot of Pixels in there).

We also get to see a kid  [Read More…]

Vertu’s new Constellation has modern specs, stunning materials … and Marshmallow

You can have a phone that’s made of exquisite materials but also has high-end specs.

Vertu is a name we often like to poke fun at for offering ridiculously overpriced phones that are more about luxury than practicality, but its latest phone, Constellation, actually aims to come closer to offering both. Vertu calls the Constellation “The Luxury Performance Smartphone,” and to that end it actually has a set of high-end specs you’d expect to find on a modern phone:  [Read More…]

Less than 1% of active Androids run Nougat, 29.6% on Marshmallow

Marshmallow is running on nearly one third of Android phones, while Nougat sees slow growth.

Google’s latest report on Android version distribution amongst active devices shows that nearly 30% of devices are now running on Marshmallow, up from 26% this time last month. Lollipop and KitKat both saw a slight dip, but together are still running on more than half of all Android devices.

Meanwhile, Nougat saw minor growth over the month of December — from 0.4%  [Read More…]

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is finally picking up the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update in India

Latest MIUI 8 build brings Marshmallow.

Xiaomi sold over 2.5 million units of the Redmi Note 3 in India, and the manufacturer is finally starting to roll out the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the phone, albeit in beta form. The phone was updated to MIUI 8 — the latest iteration of Xiaomi’s custom ROM — earlier this year, but the base kernel was still Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

The 1.3GB MIUI V8.1.1.0 MHOMIDI nightly build  [Read More…]

Galaxy Note 7 ships with Marshmallow, not Nougat — but maybe that’s not a huge deal

The Note 7 runs Android 6.0.1 out of the box — which, for the time being, is still the latest stable version of the OS. But even without Nougat, Note owners aren’t missing out on that much.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 lands at a precarious time on the Android calendar. We’re just reaching the end of the Marshmallow era, with final Android 7.0 Nougat code likely to be released in a matter of weeks. By  [Read More…]

Marshmallow is now on 15.2% of all active Android devices

Google has posted the latest Android version distribution numbers, showing yet another small bump up for Marshmallow. Specifically, Google calculates that 15.2% of active Android devices were running Marshmallow during a 7-day period ending on August 2. That compares to 13.3% of active Android devices from the previous month.

Android 5.x Lollipop went up slightly from 35.1% in July to 35.5% this month. Android 4.4 KitKat dropped from 30.1% in July to 29.2% in August. Jelly  [Read More…]
