Verizon will launch 5G in Houston this year, looking to Google as live TV provider

5G is getting really real. The spec is complete, the phones are coming, and Verizon, the largest mobile provider in the U.S., has announced that in addition to Los Angeles and Sacramento, it will launch 5G residential broadband service in Houston by the end of 2018.

Google Fiber is acquiring gigabit internet provider Webpass

Google Fiber is acquiring San Francisco-based gigabit internet provider Webpass for an undisclosed amount. Founded in 2003, Webpass is focused on providing businesses — along with select residential markets — with gigabit internet connectivity, and its acquisition will aid Google Fiber’s expansion. The acquisition is expected to close this summer following regulatory approvals.

Samsung to acquire U.S. cloud service provider Joyent

Samsung has announced that it will acquire U.S.-based cloud service provider Joyent. The South Korean vendor will leverage Joyent’s cloud platform for the Internet of Things, and powering its cloud-based services and software for mobile.

On Joyent’s blog, CEO Scott Hammond wrote:

T-Mobile is now the largest provider of prepaid phone service in the U.S.

T-Mobile has announced today that it has overtaken Sprint to be the largest prepaid service provider in the U.S., with a total of 15.64 million prepaid subscribers on the network. That’s dramatically past the other big rivals AT&T and Verizon also, who have 11.34 and 6.04 million prepaid customers, respectively — and T-Mobile shows no signs of slowing down.
