India is setting up an IMEI database to discourage phone theft

The central equipment identity register is expected to be implemented in the coming weeks.

What you need to know India’s Department of Telecom (DoT) will soon implement a central register of IMEI numbers to tackle the phone theft menace. The DoT will blacklist IMEI numbers that are reported to it as being stolen or lost, blocking access to cellular networks. Another objective of the central register will be to make IMEI-based lawful interception easier.

Sony’s My Xperia Theft Protection reportedly breaking unlocked devices

Sony’s My Xperia Theft Protection (MXTP) feature, currently live on a number of the company’s newer products, will apparently break bootloader-unlocked devices. For new devices that haven’t been unlocked, enabling MXTP removes the ability to unlock the bootloader. The real problem presents itself when you enable the feature on a device where the bootloader is already unlocked.

Gemalto denies ‘massive theft’ of SIM card encryption keys by NSA and GCHQ

Digital security vendor Gemalto revealed its findings today following last week’s report of an incursion by the NSA and the GCHQ into the vendor’s SIM card encryption keys. While Gemalto noted that an operation by NSA and GCHQ “probably happened” in 2010 and 2011, the intrusion could not have resulted in a “massive theft” of SIM card encryption keys as the breach affected the company’s office network and not its secure networks.
